Miami Mayor Wants Bodycams On All Cops

Written by Justin King | The Anti-Media
The Mayor of Miami-Dade is calling for cameras to be worn by hundreds of officers while they are on duty. Mayor Carlos Giménez is calling for the cameras in the wake of the massive civil unrest caused by the shooting of an unarmed teen in Ferguson, Missouri.
Giménez included the funds to purchase 500 of the cameras in this year’s proposed budget. That would be enough to issue cameras to roughly half of the department’s patrol officers. It is expected that the program would be expanded next year to include all officers. Giménez sees the cameras as a common sense approach to combat police brutality and provide accountability.

The Protests May Be Winding Down, But Ferguson's Fight Is Not Over

by Alice Speri

An out-of-towner driving through Ferguson, Missouri on West Florissant Avenue on Friday morning might easily have missed the signs of the protests and clashes that have dominated this stretch of suburbs for the past two weeks.

In fact, the signs are there: most stores are boarded up, with "open" signs sprayed over the wooden panels that used to be glass windows. The burnt down shell of the Quiktrip gas station — which is at once Ferguson's "Ground Zero" and its "Maidan" — is still there, surrounded by a metal fence that was not there a few days ago.

The area got brand new "I heart Ferguson" signs, planted in every courtyard and hanging from every pole, and messages of hope and love are all over town — on colored signs drawn by children, or on the boards covering up the Ferguson Market and Liquor store, the site of looting last week.

WHY DID POLICE IN NEW ORLEANS BUY SNOW CAMOUFLAGE?

Uh, say again?
Picture: Pentagon

by MATTHEW CHAMPION | i100

No, it’s not the start of a riddle.
But ever since events in Ferguson thrust the apparent over-militarisation of police in the US into the global limelight, a little-publicised law allowing law enforcement agencies to buy surplus military grade weaponry and equipment has been scrutinised.
The New York Times collated information from the ominously-named Programme 1033 and posted it online.
New Orleans’s the Lens subsequently found that police in two counties in the city – known for its mild winters and hot, humid summers – had spent almost $3million on equipment, including:
  • Night-vision sniper scopes
  • A mine-resistant vehicle
  • 30 survival axes
  • 20 snow camouflage parkas

PSYOP: IT DOESN’T MATTER IF MIKE BROWN ROBBED A STORE

by INFOWARS.COM

After a frightening show of force by the Ferguson Police Department, in which they fired upon peaceful protesters and members of the press, the police release video stills of an alleged robbery involving slain teen, Mike Brown. As if petty theft justifies the execution of an unarmed man and a police state in America.

REPORT: POLICE TOLD TO STAND DOWN DURING LOOTING IN FERGUSON

Plenty of militarized cops out in force to harass peaceful protesters and journalists; AWOL when actual looting takes place.  According to at least one eyewitness, police also stood idly by during last week’s round of looting, as well. (Source

The hacker group Anonymous claims it has the name of the Ferguson, Missouri, police officer involved in the fatal shooting of an unarmed black teenager over the weekend.
But in a rare display of caution, the group said Wednesday it is waiting to release the officer's name until it can be confirmed.
"We have the name of the shooter," the group tweeted. "We just can't verify. We need to either talk to witnesses or get a second leak source."
One member of Anonymous told HuffPost the hacker group wanted "to be absolutely positive it is correct."
"There have been instances in the past where anons have released erroneous dox," the Anonymous member “katanon" said in an interview via online chat room, referring to the hacker slang of exposing a person's true identity online.

Update: Armed SWAT Teams To Patrol Streets In Arkansas City

Update: Rita Sklar, executive director of ACLU-Arkansas, said that aspects of Paragould Police Chief Todd Stovall's plan to have officers dressed in SWAT gear and armed with AR-15 assault rifles demanding ID from citizens in high crime areas shows that he has "zero understanding of Constitutional rights, period." Meanwhile, the Paragould PD issued a statement yesterday cancelling further town hall meetings on the proposal, citing "public safety" concerns after a growing backlash about the proposal. Paragould, Arkansas Mayor Mike Gaskill and Police Chief Todd Stovall announced at a December 14 Town Hall meeting that beginning in 2013 the streets of their city were going to be patrolled by police officers bearing SWAT gear and AR-15s. “If you’re out walking, we’re going to stop you, ask why you’re out walking, and check for your ID.”
The move comes in response to a recent increase in violent crime. In a city with a population of only 26,113, Paragould had 86 rapes, robberies and assaults in 2010 and those numbers are expected to nearly double for 2012. Paragould currently has a City-Data crime index rating of 465.0, well above the national average of 309.3.
Property crime statistics in Paragould are even more alarming. While the national average for burglary, theft and auto theft is at 7 for every 1,000 people, the Paragould average is 20.14.
Police Chief Stovall told citizens attending the Town Hall meeting that he did not consult an attorney before making plans to institute what he considers martial law. He also announced that task force members could stop anyone they wanted to and didn’t even need to be looking for a specific suspect on the streets.
According to Stovall, any individual who does not produce identification could be charged with obstructing a governmental operation.

New York Police Department opens a new branch in Kfar Saba, Israel

Madison Ruppert, Contributor

In what just might be one of the strangest recent news stories, Israeli news outlets are reporting that the New York Police Department (NYPD) is opening a branch in Kfar Saba, a city in the Sharon region of the Central District of Israel.

Yes, the NYPD, the same department which recently shot nine innocent bystanders in the course of taking out one murderer, employs officers who have detained people for dancing, has thrown an officer in a psychiatric ward for reporting widespread corruption, and even conducted completely illegal spying operations far outside their jurisdiction. The NYPD has also been busted for their widespread illegal surveillance of Muslims, labeling people who film police “professional agitators” and even for falsely inflating their counterterrorism record.

The above are just a few examples among countless others showing the NYPD to be a corrupt, deplorable entity which apparently has no problem with going far beyond the legal limits.

Now the NYPD has made all their past activities look almost reasonable by actually opening up a branch in Israel supposedly in order to strengthen the NYPD’s ties with the Israeli security forces according to the Ma’ariv newspaper (non-translated version here) in Israel.

The Methadone Trade: The Beat

Current.TV

Sergeant Toby Hinton tasks his team with uncovering and confiscating illegal methadone on Vancouver streets. When users aren't overdosing, many sell their methadone supplies in order to buy cocaine and heroin. Constables Kristie Fisher and Shane Aitken hunt down secret, unauthorized prescriptions among the downtown eastside.

In this gritty ten-part reality series, cameras follow the Beat Enforcement Team--a special police squad assigned to patrol an urban area suffering skyrocketing crime rates and rampant drug use. Attempting to juggle their dangerous jobs with their home lives, the officers commit to doing everything they can to clean up the dangerous streets and improve the lives of those in the community.

"The Beat" airs Mondays at 8/7c on Current TV.
