Mayors of America Unite to tell Obama and Congress: End the Wars and Keep The Money at Home

(BALTIMORE) - The United States Conference of Mayors, representing 1,200 cities with populations over 30,000, voted in their June 20 plenary session to call on the federal government to end America’s wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and redirect that military spending to home land priorities.

The Conference of Mayors first convened during the depths of the Depression and mayors have met annually ever since; but the last time they addressed American military policy was when they called for an end to America’s war in Vietnam.

Mayor Kitty Piercy, of Eugene, Oregon, introduced Resolution 59 stating, “Mayors call on our country to begin the journey of turning war dollars back into peace dollars, of bringing our loved ones home and of focusing our national resources on building security and prosperity here at home. Our children and families long for and call for a real investment in the future of America. It is past due.”

Vision: An Antiwar Movement That Puts Peace Over Politicians

Instead of continuing the hard work of protesting unjust wars, too many people took the election of politicians with "D"s after their name as their own Mission Accomplished.

After campaigning as the candidate of change, the man awarded a Nobel Prize for peace has given the world nothing but more war. Yet despite Barack Obama's continuation – nay, escalation – of the worst aspects of George W. Bush's foreign policy, including his very own illegal war in Libya, you’d be hard-pressed to find the large-scale protests and outrage from the liberal establishment that characterized his predecessor's reign (and only seems to pop up when a Republican's the one dropping the bombs).

That's not for a lack of things to protest. Since taking office, Obama has doubled the number of troops in Afghanistan and now looks set to break his pledge to begin a significant withdrawal in July. He has unilaterally committed the nation to an unapologetically illegal war in Libya and in two years has authorized more drone strikes in Pakistan than his predecessor authorized in two terms, with one in three of their victims reportedly civilians. In Yemen, he has targeted a U.S. citizen for assassination and approved a cluster bomb strike that, according to Amnesty International, killed 35 innocent women and children.

Gates: 'Premature' to eye faster Afghan pullout

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US Secretary of Defense Robert Gates has said accelerating troop withdrawals from Afghanistan because of Osama bin Laden's death would be "premature."

The US covert raid that killed Al-Qaeda's chief has fueled calls to scale back the massive US presence in Afghanistan, just as President Barack Obama reviews plans to begin pulling out some of the 100,000 troops there in July.

Gates, in an interview broadcast on the CBS news show "60 Minutes," said it's too early to consider speeding the pace of withdrawal.

"I think it's premature," he said. "I think we just don't know. It's only been a week. And people are already drawing historical conclusions. I think that's a little quick."

MUST SEE: Kucinich Exposes the Entire Libya Agenda on The House Floor (Video)

Congresman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) speaks for a powerful hour on the House floor about the illegality of the Libya war.  This is a MUST SEE speech as he reveals the entire agenda behind the Libya attack. He connects the dots to the CIA quite convincingly.  And he asked the big philosophical questions: "Our dear nation stands at a crossroads. The direction we take will determine not what kind of nation we are but what kind of nation we will become. Will we become a nation which plots in secret to wage war? Will we become a nation that observes our Constitution only in matters of convenience? Will we become a nation which destroys the unity of the world community painstakingly pieced together from the ruins of World War II, a war which itself followed a war to end all wars?"

You MUST WATCH Part 2 and beyond to hear Kucinich thrash Obama and the Congress

Barack-a-lujah! I Have Seen the Light!

Cindy Sheehan
Infowars.com

Thanks to the helpful feedback I have received over these past two, or so, years, I have seen the enormous error of my ways.
I used to be against ALL wars and the use of violence, but (and I must admit a little confusion on this one, at first) now it seems that I am against wars, acts of war, and violence ONLY if a Republican is president. Now I understand with perfect clarity that it was good to protest Bush—and if the US-UN resolution against Libya was done when Bush was president, it would have been wrong—but now it’s “compassionate.” I must admit, I was a little shocked to find out that the US actually commits compassionate acts and, again, silly me—I thought most acts of war and war were for profit. I realize that only a jerk (or racist) would think that now. I have repented.
I cringe with embarrassment when I think of the wasted years imagining that there could be any other way to solve problems without killing more innocent people! It’s okay to bomb Libyans to save Libyans (or Iraqis to save Iraqis; or Afghans to save Afghans; or Yemenis to save Yemenis, etc) because a Democratic president who has been given the cover of the UN Security Council may bomb them. Yep, it’s all starting to make sense. With all the continuing conflicts, imagining a world without war was starting to seem useless—and now I know it was! Phew!

US lawmakers seek big Afghan withdrawal in July

© AFP Peter Parks
AFP

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Eighty-one US lawmakers, mostly Democratic allies of the White House, pressed President Barack Obama on Wednesday to make a "significant and sizeable" drawdown of US forces from Afghanistan in July.

"Let us be clear. The redeployment of a minimal number of US troops from Afghanistan in July will not meet the expectations of Congress or the American people," the group, all members of the US House of Representatives, said in a letter to Obama.

The lawmakers, just four of whom were Republicans, expressed support for Obama's plans to start withdrawing US troops from Afghanistan no later than July 2011 with an eye to transferring security to Afghan forces by 2014.

Hacktivist Operation Payback: Cyber War is revenge for WikiLeaks (VIDEO)

Youtube -RTV
A group of activist hackers have begun attacking MasterCard.com, Amazon.com, PostFinace, Paypal.com and others in retaliation for cutting of the WikiLeaks organization. The targeted companies, after receiving pressure from the US government, opted to sever their relationships with WikiLeaks, preventing the organization from hosting its site, halting the flow of donations and freezing the organization's Swiss bank accounts. The group of hackers is leaderless and operates anonymously.

Expats recalled as North Korea prepares for war

North Korean Workers - Reuters image
Shaun Walker
The Independent

A mass exodus of North Korean workers from the Far East of Russia is under way, according to reports coming out of the region. As the two Koreas edged towards the brink of war this week, it appears that the workers in Russia have been called back to aid potential military operations.

Vladnews agency, based in Vladivostok, reported that North Korean workers had left the town of Nakhodka en masse shortly after the escalation of tension on the Korean peninsula earlier this week. "Traders have left the kiosks and markets, workers have abandoned building sites, and North Korean secret service employees working in the region have joined them and left," the agency reported.

Russia's migration service said that there were over 20,000 North Koreans in Russia at the beginning of 2010, of which the vast majority worked in construction. The workers are usually chaperoned by agents from Kim Jong-il's security services and have little contact with the world around them. Defectors have suggested that the labourers work 13-hour days and that most of their pay is sent back to the government in Pyongyang. Hundreds of workers have fled the harsh conditions and live in hiding in Russia, constantly in fear of being deported back to North Korea.

Peace Activist says organized anti-war groups are complicit in prolonging illegal wars and war crimes

Oracle Broadcasting

Phil Restino - Veterans For Peace Co-Chair for Florida’s Chapter 136, was a guest on Deadline Live with Jack Blood on Voting Day, Tuesday November 2, 2010 on the Oracle Broadcasting Radio Network.

Phil talked about the Central Florida chapter of Veterans For Peace resolution calling for the Impeachment of President Obama for war crimes committed under his command and authority ... the same war crimes that Veterans For Peace and the antiwar groups for years cited in our call for the Impeachment of President George W. Bush.  To access the Impeachment resolution, please go to this post from Gold Star Mother Cindy Sheehan who endorsed the resolution on 19 July 2010: http://cindysheehanssoapbox.blogspot.com/2010/07/impeach-obama-cindy-sheehan.html

Phil also revealed how more and more of us believe that the leadership of the national antiwar groups has actually prolonged the wars by doing all it can to keep the war a partisan issue by:

1) Establishing as policy, a double-standard in calls for accountability in regards to the Republican War Criminal in Chief George W. Bush and the Democrat War Criminal in Chief Barack H. Obama,

2) Focusing their respective flocks on differences with groups of Americans from the "right" concerning issues other than stopping the illegal wars, thus preventing any possibility of the the "left" coming together with the "right" in a truly bipartisan populist opposition to the illegal wars and a bipartisan populist demand to stop the wars and cease the occupations, and

3) the big reason that anyone with any common sense at all should be questioning ... and that is the organized antiwar movement's strange refusal to publicly question and strongly demand immediate investigations into the many, many holes in the government's own ridiculous theory explaining the conspiracy behind the 9/11 attacks  which to this very day is used as the sole reason for justifying the wars that the antiwar movement pretends to be trying to stop.

Phil says: “Anyone with at least one working eyeball and 2 live brain cells to rub together who takes just 5 minutes to examine the evidence will see that the holes in the government's story are big enough to drive WTC Building 7 itself through with room to spare !”

Raids on Activists Indicates FBI Abuse of Power

Lance Page Image/Truth-Out

Truth-Out

On the heels of a series of FBI raids on anti-war activists, an FBI whistleblower and constitutional rights groups are calling out the agency for overstepping its bounds, fearing that its increased powers could infringe on First Amendment rights and silence dissent.

Agents searched the homes of anti-war activists in Chicago, Minneapolis, Michigan and Durham, North Carolina in the last two weeks of September, along with the offices of the Minnesota Anti-War Committee, confiscating computers, cell phones, large amounts of paper and financial records, according to the activists and their attorneys.

"The FBI raids seem to reflect the latest actions by a recidivist agency that has lost sight of its mission to protect public safety," Shahid Buttar, executive director of the Bill of Rights Defense Committee and the People's Campaign for the Constitution told Truthout.
