Government is funding biotech while GMO is tainting our food

Admittedly contaminating the food supply and increasingly everywhere — genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are a risky government venture, and taxpayers are funding their own destruction.Aaron Dykes and Melissa Melton

What’s the net effect of countless lobbyists wining and dining federal government officials to approve genetically modified foods at an alarming pace and even provide grant money for its creation?

The answer, of course, remains unknown. Maybe hindsight will make it clear. Perhaps it is already evident in the sharp rise in food allergies, which now effect some 15 million Americans and are increasing steadily, as in the case of gluten sensitivity.

Nevertheless, the basic corruption of subsidizing GMO seems pretty obvious.

Orwellian Nightmare or Technological Utopia? Wired's "Living by Numbers" Health Conference

Tony Cartalucci, Contributor

Wired Magazine has conducted a "Living by Numbers" health conference in New York City, drawing together experts and leaders involved in medicine, science, technology, and business to share their perspective on the progress and future of healthcare. The underlying theme of the "Living by Numbers" conference was the gathering and applying of information regarding our health to improve the prevention and treatment of injuries and sickness.

The technology, systems, and policies presented at the event are neither good nor evil - they are only what those who wield them make them out to be. Currently much of this technology is controlled by large corporations, institutions, and organizations. By getting better informed and involved in the development and use of this technology, we can ensure that this technology is used for the greater good of humanity, rather than leveraged against it for the benefit of a technocratic elite.

‘Biofarms’ to Integrate Vaccines, Pharmaceuticals into GMO ‘Biopharmaceutical’ Crops

Anthony Gucciardi

The truth really is much stranger than fiction, especially when it comes to the open and admitted future plans of major biotechnology companies. One such case involves a biotech company known as ProdiGene, the officials of which actually faced jail time back in 2002 for contaminating the traditional food supply with ‘biopharmaceutical’ crops that were growing pharmaceuticals and vaccine components associated with AIDS, diabetes, and diarrhea.

Contaminating 500,000 bushels of soy with their biopharmaceutical corn that contained pharmaceutical and vaccine components associated with deadly diseases, the company was slapped with a minor $500,000 fine by the USDA (the same government organization that gives Monsanto’s crops special speed approval and ignores the company’s blatant disregard for its regulations). As it turns out, the pharmaceutical crops were actually mixed in with traditional crops and unknowing farmers had already planted the crops for human consumption. The USDA claims, however, that the crops were confiscated.

Virus Will Alter "God Gene" to Eliminate Religious Fanatics in Middle East? (Video)

YouTube -- 1111thought

This is a lecture by an unidentified scientist given to DoD officials inside the Pentagon. It is dated 4-13-05 - about a year after the "God Gene" was first discovered. The scientist describes a plan to alter the "God Gene" in the Middle Eastern population in order to end the turmoil in that region. I acquired the video through an unknown source and from my knowledge, connections and experience as part of a unit called Combat Camera, I have verified it to be authentic. Shamanism is the Technology of the Spirit

Robert Tindall
Reality Sandwich

A little known fact is one of the greatest breakthroughs in 20th century medical science came from a preparation used to shoot monkeys down from the tops of trees. Naked "primitives" running around the jungle with blowguns turned out to be master chemists whose curare, a paralyzing muscle relaxant, revolutionized the practice of anaesthesiology, making possible the open heart, organ transplant and hundreds of other surgeries now performed daily in hospitals around the world.

Many experts claim the teeming life of the rainforests continues to promise cures -- to AIDS, cancer, diabetes, auto-immune disorders. Yet where are these miracle drugs? Have we exhausted Nature's cornucopia? Or are we wearing blinders that prevent us from seeing them?

We decided to pose this question to Dr. Mark Plotkin. One of the generation of swashbuckling ethnobotanists trained by the legendary Amazonian explorer Richard Evans Schultes at Harvard, Plotkin is as intimate with the shamans of the jungle and their healing practices as any Westerner now alive -- and he claims the cures are there. He's seen them.

As a young man, Plotkin heeded his mentor's call to go forth and apprentice himself to the Indians. Living for many years with different Amazonian tribes, Plotkin eventually authored several books, including Tales of a Shaman's Apprentice and Medicine Quest. He also co-founded the Amazon Conservation Team with prominent Costa Rican conservationist Liliana Madrigal.

ACT is one of the few non-profit organizations determined to put itself out of a job by handing all its powers over to those it is trying to save. And "save" it literally is: hundreds of tribes and their ancient systems of knowledge have gone extinct in the years since European contact, and just as the survival of the Amazon rainforest is now at stake, the ancient cultures of the forest could vanish as well within a generation. That is, unless astute visionaries like Mark Plotkin and his tribal colleagues have their way.

The fifty-two year old ethnobotanist appeared for our interview nearby the UC Berkeley campus accompanied by a shaman from the Ingano tribe, a soft-spoken middle-aged man, Don Fernando, wearing a baseball cap, whom Plotkin had brought to the United States as part of a campaign to protect his people from the violent incursions of timber and oil companies. Before arriving, Plotkin had emphasized, "You can photograph me, but no photos of the shaman. If his image got back to Colombia, it could be very dangerous." Both of them wore jeans and native jewelry and spoke with an easy familiarity that indicated mutual respect.

EU food safety chief forced to quit GM lobby role

Jemima Roberts and Tom Levitt
The Ecologist

Questions raised over why European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) chair Diana Banati failed to make clear her connections to International Life Science Institute (ILSI), which advises biotech giants like Monsanto, Bayer and BASF

A key figure in charge of food safety within the EU has been forced to quit her director role at a pro-GM group.

European Green MEPs had called for EFSA chair Diana Banati's resignation after she had failed to disclose her seat on the board of directors of the International Life Science Institute (ILSI), which advises biotech corporations including Monsanto, Bayer and BASF.

However, she has been re-elected as chair of the European food safety watchdog after EFSA confirmed she had resigned from ‘positions which may create a potential conflict of interest'.

Campaigners said her links were 'unbelievable' and brought into question both the judgement of the EFSA’s senior management and the impartiality of the organisation as a whole.

After Growth, Fortunes Turn for Monsanto

Andrew Pollack
NY Times

As recently as late December,Monsanto was named “company of the year” by Forbes magazine. Last week, the company earned a different accolade from Jim Cramer, the television stock market commentator. “This may be the worst stock of 2010,” he proclaimed.

Bags of Asgrow Roundup Ready soybean seeds sit inside a Monsanto lab in St. Louis. Monsanto, the world’s biggest seed company, plans to complete most of its $800 million stock buyback plan more than a year ahead of schedule after the shares dropped to the lowest since 2007.

Monsanto, the giant of agricultural biotechnology, has been buffeted by setbacks this year that have prompted analysts to question whether its winning streak of creating ever more expensive genetically engineered crops is coming to an end.

The company’s stock, which rose steadily over several years to peak at around $140 a share in mid-2008, closed Monday at $47.77, having fallen about 42 percent since the beginning of the year. Its earnings for the fiscal year that ended in August, which will be announced Wednesday, are expected to be well below projections made at the beginning of the year, and the company has abandoned its profit goal for 2012 as well.
