The 3D Printed Firearm Has Been Taken to the Next Level

When Cody Wilson unveiled the first 3D printed firearm in 2012, it was earth-shattering news. Even though the gun had limited practical applications in the real world, it was still an incredibly novel concept with huge implications for the future. Since that time, several additional homemade firearm designs have caused both outrage and adoration from the public, especially in regards to 3D printed AR lowers.

However, it seems like the whole 3D printing scene has cooled off a bit. It’s a little under the radar now. People are getting used to the concept, and as the technology continues to make progress you’d be hard pressed to find as many sensationalist headlines as you could before. But rest assured that the movement to manufacture firearms at home is still making waves, as it paves the way for a future where no firearm is out of the reach of a 3D printer.

If You Can't Stop 3D Printed Guns - Print One

People will inevitably 3D print guns and there is nothing you can do to stop them except prepare society to be mature and responsible enough to handle this new power. 

Guns don't kill people, people kill people. And the sort of people that kill range from the mentally unstable and/or the medicated, to political extremists, to criminals, and of course the biggest killer in human history, the government. Unfortunately, a shortage of weapons or the legal inaccessibility of weaponry never seems to be enough to stop such people from harming or killing others - and levels of violence appear more linked to social and economic issues rather than access to weaponry. 

Take the United Kingdom and Japan for example, two nations with populations that are for all intents and purposes "disarmed." Despite the UK having a population almost twice as small as Japan's it still has more total murders per year then their Japanese counterparts. The problem is socioeconomic, and so too is the solution. Here, we can see that access to weapons has little correlation to violence.

In fact, one could easily overlay a map of global poverty on top a map of global homicides and see the obvious correlation. And despite America's love-affair with firearms, it is by far not the most violent nation on Earth - not even close.

3D printing offers a range of potential benefits and open-source solutions to free humanity from centralized corporate and police state shackles. Naturally, the good elements are being fought tooth-and-nail, while the aberrant forms are brought to us by the military-industrial complex as an essential security solution.

3D-printed military drones are now being explored, with some successes already being reported. In May of last year, Robo Raven (discussed below) was announced which incorporates 3D-printed components to produce independently flapping wings.

Now the Department of Defense has provided funding to the University of Virginia to develop the first fully 3D-printed UAV called the The Razor that can be created in less than a day with off-the-shelf parts and a smartphone running a customized flight-control app.

This is an update to the ongoing progress with 3D printed weapons. 

The eyes of the world are on the innovation of 3D printing. Naturally, whenever a new technology is created that offers open source DIY opportunities to the average individual, it is going to make governments and their protected corporate interests very nervous.

Such is the case with 3D weapons manufacturing. Defense Distributed has been offering sets of computer files for free through their DEFCAD online library, including their now 50+ files in the MEGA PACK. Their progress, as well as their subsequent hindering by the US Department of Defense Trade Controls, has been documented by a series of video updates below.

Legal difficulties aside, progress continues. The Lulz Liberator was the latest to be introduced by two Wisconsin engineers; they built upon the work of Defense Distributed and entered into the 3D handgun market made as the cheapest yet produced at just $25. Now, the world has been given a prototype for the first full rifle seen in the video below. As noted by the developer, ThreeD Ukulele, the gun was named after the Canadian-built Sherman Tanks of WWII.

For those who have not followed the Open Source Movement – while many or most of you were arguing Mac or Windows, Free BSD was doing cartwheels where Mac System 6 and Windows 3.1 (both could play music CD’s, neither could surf the web) could barely stay booted-up.

But deceased Steve Jobs and Monsanto’s Michael Taylor could well surpass Bill Gates' position as most hated man on Earth today if either could corner 3D tech, now. BTW, open-source Firefox works the best. This is not about guns, this is about Boardwalk Place billionaire monopoly via Plutarchs.

Let us digress – the government has focused the corrupt lamestream media onto guns as populace bogeyman aka fear mongering. How many of your loved ones were assassinated via plastic homemade guns? How many of your loved ones might soon in the future need a 3D bio-liver, 3D bio-kidney or 3D bio-cornea transplant? The great national panic is the consumer printing their own, bypassing Astra Zeneca, Dow, 3M and Monsanto.

Now, after 8 months of discussing the possibility of a fully printable 3D handgun with all parts made of a composite plastic, except for the firing pin, Defense Distributed is set to release the new CAD files to the Web following a successful test fire on Saturday which can be seen in the latest video below.

New 3D Printed AR-15 Mag Called "Cuomo" Holds 30 Rounds

The first video is the new design of the AR-15 printable magazine by Defense Distributed with follower and loading procedure. The second video shows test firing the 30-round magazine on fully-automatic mode.  The company named the new magazine the "Cuomo" to mock New York Governor Cuomo's attempt to limit magazines to 7 rounds.

Wired Magazine has conducted a "Living by Numbers" health conference in New York City, drawing together experts and leaders involved in medicine, science, technology, and business to share their perspective on the progress and future of healthcare. The underlying theme of the "Living by Numbers" conference was the gathering and applying of information regarding our health to improve the prevention and treatment of injuries and sickness.

New Patent Aims to Prevent 3D Printers From Creating “Restricted Items”

Recently there has been a great deal of controversy over 3D printers and their ability to bypass intrusive government laws and regulations, specifically in the realm of firearms. It seems that the establishment has already been hard at work developing ways in which they can keep a lid on this technology and prevent it from being truly useful to the general population.

As I discussed last week the goal of restricting this technology is to keep industries cartelized and prevent the average person from gaining too much independence through these devices. A new patent, issued this week by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office titled ‘Manufacturing control system’ aims to do just that. Although it was issued this week it was actually filed way back in 2007, so it seems that they have working on this for some time. The patent describes a system where the owners of 3D printers or similar machines will have to obtain authorization before they are allowed to print certain items.

Whenever a new technology is created that has the potential to offer more opportunity and freedom to the average human being, we must listen to the "concerns" generated by major industry and governments. With the Internet, we hear the propaganda that what we know to be a level playing field of the free market of ideas is perceived by those in power as a "potential terrorist recruiting source." In this way, there is a full spectrum of excuses that can be employed for overt suppression, or de facto suppression through regulation, which inevitably results in the hoarding of technology by corporations and governments.

The latest technology that is increasing its footprint exponentially (with a subsequent exponential reduction in cost) is 3D printing. And, true to form, the establishment has focused on the nearly free weaponry that could be -- and, in fact, has been -- created, from drones to guns. Here is the central concern stated by The Lowy Institute's Australian propaganda outlet:

Effectively, this means that an individual or group has the ability – with minimal investment – to avoid the cumbersome task of purchasing expensive overseas technology and instead print their weapon. (Source)

Defense Distributed, a new company that planned to help average people create firearms at home with 3D printershas had their equipment seized by the manufacture after news of their controversial project was picked up by the media.

In an email that Cody Wilson of Defense Distributed received from "Stratasys" the manufacture, he was told that his primary project, Wikiweapon was illegal. A day later contractors hired by the company arrived at Wilson’s apartment in an Enterprise rental van and took the printer, which apparently hadn't even been taken out of the box yet.

There are many technologies that are beginning to emerge in the consumer market that have the potential to radically disrupt the status quo and shift the power balance on this earth in favor of the general population.
