Whistleblower: Federal Reserve "Highly Alarmed" After Modeling Shows Bitcoin Conquering Dollar by 2021

The Federal Reserve is apparently very worried about bitcoin disrupting the monetary system.

According to an alleged whistleblower's post on Reddit, Fed governors were "highly alarmed" by internal economic modeling that showed Bitcoin has the potential to completely displace the dollar by as early as 2021 (which they called "worst case").

The whistleblower, who currently remains anonymous, claims to work for the Federal Reserve as a researcher who was tasked with doing "econometrics and related modeling" for Bitcoin.

He writes:

The Dirty: We were directed to upgrade our modeling of bitcoin from developing currency to a major currency. In addition to all of the common modeling and forecasting that task entails, we were instructed to do full simulations of money flows, interest rates, multi currency derivative baskets, risk metrics, and their effects on global macro monetary policy and trade agreements. What we found was shocking. Even with a mediocre adoption rate and variable growth rate, bitcoin severely disrupts how we model, forecast, and ultimately understand currency interactions to make monetary policy decisions. This is a huge technological, monetary, and policy disruption which leaves the Fed, the US govt, and other entities with much less control.

Yesterday, President Obama stated that “we tortured some folks” in the aftermath of 9/11. Later in the day, he expressed his full confidence in his CIA Director, a man several pundits have pointed out was supportive of such torture during the Bush administration.

Obama pointed out that torture is against our “values”.

No. A long wait at the grocery store is against our values. Abduction and torture without trial, on the other hand, is illegal.

Warrantless surveillance of the American civilian population, more than a year after Edward Snowden first came out with his “revelations,” is illegal. Using the IRS to intimidate and slow down political opposition is illegal.

A schism has been created in the activist world, with the appearance of the algorithm called Bitcoin. Its apparent genius means that we haven’t a chance of knowing how good Bitcoin is, because it’s clear that the person or people who created it had expertise in cryptography ANDeconomics, along with a good working knowledge of network science, computer technology, maths, law, and commerce.

In Davis's New Yorker article he describes the impenetrable nature of Nakamoto's code. Every time his computer security researcher thought he found a hole, he would discover a taunting message from Nakamoto indicating it had already been patched. It was, Davis said, like a thief tunneling under a bank only to discover that someone had poured concrete into his path "with a sign telling him to go home. (Adam L. Penenberg, 2011)

Since most people specialise, not diversify, within their field of knowledge, few people are in a position to judge Bitcoin’s efficacy, or its potential effect.

Homeland Security Calls Bitcoin an "Emerging Threat"

The popularity of the digital currency Bitcoin is exploding. Today's price spiked over $600, nearly double what is was just over a week ago. It seems the U.S. government now wants into the party.

Today several federal agencies weighed in on the decentralized currency. While most agencies acknowledged its legitimate uses, the Department of Homeland Security referred to Bitcoin as an emerging threat.

In a letter to the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, DHS wrote that they have "been actively investigating the emerging threat and criminal exploitation of virtual currency systems that further transnational criminal operations."

DHS blamed "anonymity in cyberspace" and called for an aggressive posture to deal with bitcoin and other crypto-currencies.

Bitcoin Comes Under Full Scale Attack by Regulators

Digital cryptocurrencies, like Bitcoin, still have a long way to go before mainstream use, but they seem to pose a huge threat to the existing financial paradigm as evidence by the recent frantic reaction by regulators.

To be clear, cryptocurrencies are threatening because no central entity can fully control them and they also represent a nearly free and anonymous payment application.  It's an algorithm that has the potential to make central banks, commercial banks, private banks, and the tax collectors obsolete.

In other words, cryptocoins may be epoch changing for society.  In the same way the Internet killed publishing or how VoIP killed long distance telephone carriers, cryptocoins may in fact kill debt-based money and brick-and-mortar banking.
