4 Prepping Lessons Learned Following a Near Disaster

Before the smoke got really bad
Gaye Levy

Living in the Pacific Northwest, you become accustomed to the occasional earthquake. I still remember the earthquake of 1964 as well as the big Nisqually quake of 2001. I especially remember that there was a lot of destruction during the 2001 quake, and that our neighbor’s house slid off its foundation.

There is no way to anticipate these sudden, unexpected events. But we can do our best to prepare for them not only as individuals and as families, but as communities as well.

Here in my own small community, we experienced our own unexpected event on Wednesday morning when an 85’ yacht at our marina burst into flames. For those of you not familiar with boats and marinas, let me explain the danger.

First of all, boats these days are made of fiberglass. When burned, fiberglass produces heavy toxic fumes and smoke – lots of it. Then there is the matter of fuel. Typically, diesel fuel is flammable but not explosive. On the other hand, gasoline is both highly flammable and explosive. In this case, the burning yacht was adjacent to a fuel dock where both diesel and gasoline are pumped to visiting vessels...

FEMA Pushes Prepping for Pets and Disabled

Message from FEMA: "Prepare as if nobody is coming to rescue you" and "microchip your pets".
Activist Post

FEMA just released two new videos encouraging pet owners and the disabled to prepare for disasters. FEMA refers to them as "Preparing Makes Sense" instructional videos.

The YouTube description for the Preparing Makes Sense for Pet Owners video reads, "A unique instructional video containing information for pet owners and suggestions for proactive pet emergency preparedness."

One of FEMA's strong recommendations for prepping with pets is to microchip them.

"Microchipping is a particularly effective way to identify pets separated from their owners in an emergency," Jordan Crump of the Humane Society claims in the video.

Alternatives to a Bugout Location – What You Should Consider

Holly Deyo, Contributor

Every person will face an ugly new reality when life as we know it vanishes. It's coming. Soon. It might be a slow crawl decline or a rapid descent into nightmarish conditions. Various scenarios now flit threateningly across the horizon. If we're brave enough to peer into the abyss, we can see some of these events bordering on fruition. Most are unnerving; some will be paralyzing. Regardless of the fright factor, we must examine individually how to handle these looming crises. When they strike, people without a plan in place, will die.

So what's lurking about?

GRID DOWN

What threatens us now is nothing we've ever experienced. Life would change unspeakably from a mega-disaster dwarfing Hurricane Katrina. Catastrophic grid failure from EMPs or the Sun throwing a massive CME at Earth would instantly hurl much of the globe into 3rd world conditions. There is precedence.

October 2003 the Sun shot off a life-withering X45 mega-flare. This was more than twice as bigas any previous event. The only thing that saved us from a grid-down catastrophe was this raging storm erupting away from Earth. Had this been Earth-directed, you would not be reading this article now. Life would have changed cataclysmically.

SC Mission 2012 Starts Tomorrow: Disaster Exercise Masquerading as 'Free Healthcare Event'

SC Mission 2012

Activist Post

On the heels of a WMD drill known as Operation Four Aces being conducted in the Myrtle Beach, South Carolina area, the state capital of Columbia is now getting a taste of the action as well. The difference, however, is that this event is not specifically centered around a terrorist attack. In fact, this drill supposedly isn’t even a drill at all.

SC Mission 2012 is actually described as “a free healthcare event for people living in the Midlands” whose mission is to “1) address the immediate needs of individuals and 2) help place these individuals in a medical home to receive regular care. Services include free medical, dental, vision and pharmacy services.”

The description continues, stating that the services being provided will be available to anyone who needs medical care.

So far so good.

However, SC Mission 2012 is somewhat more than a free healthcare fair. It is actually a disaster training exercise that will include the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control office of Public Health Preparedness (SCDHEC PHP) and none other than the South Carolina State Guard.

Why the Rich Elite will Suffer When the SHTF

The rich elite will suffer if there is a collapse and rest of us working stiffs will be fine thank you very much. That is my belief anyway.

So why? Conventional wisdom and sense (if you want to call it that) tells us that those with fat bank accounts have it made: steady incomes, nice homes, luxury automobiles, and lots of help in the way of secretaries, personal chefs, housekeepers, gardeners, pool tenders and a myriad of other folks that make their day quite pleasant. In addition, they have all the latest and toys gadgets and when a new model comes out they are first in line to get it.

So initially, these fat cats will be just fine in the event of a global economic collapse. But wait? What will happen to their cushy life when money becomes devalued or even worthless? Well first of all, they will go through their pantries in a week or two – possibly a month – and then find that when they need basic supplies, the shelves at the grocery are empty. The gardener is long gone and they did not learn to grow their own food because all the digging and tending would ruin their manicure.

A major initiative has been placed on Family/Personal Preparedness for all NASA personnel. The NASA/Family Preparedness Program is designed to provide awareness, resources, and tools to the NASA Family (civil servants and contractors) to prepare for an emergency situation. The most important assets in the successful completion of NASA’s mission are our employees’ and their families. We are taking the steps to prepare our workforce, but it is your personal obligation to prepare yourself and your families for emergencies.

The Powers-That-Be seem to be ramping-up efforts to drive a stake right into America's heart(land).  Natural disasters are on the rise, and an increasing amount of evidence is leading to the conclusion that these natural disasters might not be completely natural.

Some already have speculated that we are entering a time of weather and earthquake wars, as the incidence of mega disasters has risen across the world.  Is government experimentation simply going awry, or is it being orchestrated on purpose?

Practically everything that you can imagine is going to be happening in the coming months and years, and then, after the things that you can imagine happen, a lot of things that you cannot imagine are going to happen.

The outbreak of near-apocalyptic storms in the southeastern region of North America in recent days, [1] is only part of the first wave of the sort of things that will become commonplace. The huge earthquake, tsunami and ongoing nuclear crisis in Japan are also only part of the first wave of the sort of things that will become commonplace.

So get ready. Really big events are in the works. The future will be here very soon, whether you are prepared for it or not. In the memorable words of the Cypher character from the first Matrix movie:

Americans are Preparing at Unprecedented Levels

Mac Slavo
SHTF Plan

Do you have enough larder to feed your family and some friends if grocery stores ran out of food? How about several assault rifles and a few thousand rounds of ammo? Solar panels, a water filter, medical kits, bug-out bags, fire starters, tents, sleeping bags, some junk silver and reserve gasoline?

Don’t worry, you’re not alone.

It’s becoming apparent to many Americans that depending on our local, state and federal governments in the event of an emergency, catastrophic societal collapse or widespread disaster will not be sufficient to meet the needs of your family. Residents in Colorado (and likely the other 49 states) are stockpiling in droves and preparing to live off the grid if it comes to that:

Traces of Radiation Detected in Arkansas Air Samples; Experts Say There's No Risk to Human Health

The following Arkansas Department of Health press release fails to mention the fact that the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) is attempting to make the mainstream media cover up of the Fukushima cloud a bit easier

Little Rock - Air quality samples taken in the state this week have detected the presence of iodine-131, which is an element that has been associated with the nuclear power plant accident in Japan. According to the EPA, these types of findings are to be expected in the coming days all across the country and are far below levels of human health concern, including for infants and children.

The air monitors are maintained by the Arkansas Department of Health, which routinely monitors air conditions around Arkansas Nuclear One (ANO).

William Mason, MD, Emergency Preparedness branch chief, said, “We know that people are very concerned about possible air contamination from the nuclear power plant in Japan. These levels detected in Arkansas are well below the conservative level of concern for human health. Along with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and other federal and state agencies, we are carefully monitoring the situation.”

"Radiation (including iodine-131) is all around us in our daily lives, and these findings are a minuscule amount compared to what people experience every day from sources other than air, food and water. For example, a person would be exposed to low levels of radiation on a round trip cross-country flight, watching television and medical testing," Mason said.

In response to the ongoing situation in Japan, the EPA has taken steps to increase the level of nationwide monitoring of rainwater, drinking water and other potential exposure routes through its RadNet program. RadNet is operated by the EPA. Its mission is to monitor environmental radioactivity in the United States in order to provide high quality data for assessing public exposure and environmental impacts resulting from nuclear emergencies and to provide baseline data during routine conditions.

In general, data generated from RadNet provide the information base for making decisions necessary to ensure the protection of public health. The system helps EPA determine whether additional sampling or other actions are needed in response to particular releases of radioactivity to the environment. RadNet can also provide supplementary information on population exposure, radiation trends and other aspects of releases.

For more information on RadNet, please go to http://www.epa.gov/narel/radnet/.

How To Find a Bunker If Doomsday Is on the Way

Activist Post

As signs of the End Times both man made and natural become impossible to ignore, it seems that an increasing number of people are willing to take survivalism to its ultimate conclusion: the doomsday bunker.

It is still a relatively small market, but builders of fallout shelters and survival bunkers of all stripes are recording record sales in the wake of increasing natural disasters, chaotic political upheaval, and the threat of coming earth changes.

One company, Hardened Structures cites the following client demographics:

  • 30% believe in 2012 or end-of-the world scenarios
  • 50-55% are concerned about economic collapse and political unrest
  • 20% wish to protect against military, data storage and EMP threats
Knowing that U.S. officials themselves have prepared for the very same cataclysmic scenarios through their Continuity of Government agenda, it would be wise to take a look at what the survival marketplace has to offer for those of us who don't have the ultimate bunker, Cheyenne Mountain, at our disposal.

EPA to Help Mainstream Media Obscure The Truth About Radiation Exposure to Americans

Dees Illustration
Brandon Turbeville

As Americans focus on March Madness and Dancing With the Stars instead of the radioactive plume spreading all across the country, the US EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) is attempting to make the mainstream media cover up of the Fukushima cloud a bit easier.

The agency now notorious for itsinfamous claim that the air was safe to breathe after 9/11 is now seeking toraise the PAGs (Protective Action Guides) to levels vastly higher than those at which they are currently set allowing for more radioactive contamination of the environment and the general public in the event of a radioactive disaster.

PAGs are policies established by the EPA that guide the agency in enforcing the various environmental laws such as the Clean Air and Water Act in the invent of a radioactive emergency such as a nuclear/dirty bomb or factory meltdown like that occurring in Japan.

The EPA had already established PAGs in this area in 1992. They can be found here. However, the agency now plans to amend and revise these standards this year.

Wall Street and the big banks rip us off, and Boobus Americanus eats more junk food. But ignoring the criminals who are ruining the entire West with their monetary Ponzi scheme is hardly a cure. For one thing, we have to be prepared for retaliation by Gadaffi in New York or some other American city. But as individuals and families, we don’t have to take it. Given what lies ahead, here is what courageous Americans can do.

"Examining all the available information from Japan is essential to understanding the event's implications for the United States."

Tokyo has declared an exclusion zone with a radius of 20 kilometers (12 miles) around the northeastern Fukushima power station and evacuated tens of thousands of people, after it was crippled by the March 11 quake and tsunami.

Engineers hope to restart the cooling systems of all six reactors that were knocked out by the 14-meter (46-foot) tsunami, and they have already reconnected the wider facility to the national power grid.

3 Ways To Protect Yourself From Radiation NATURALLY

Mary Hickcox, R.N.
Activist Post

Radiation is something that we all come into contact with on a daily basis.  It generally comes in two forms: terrestrial and cosmic.

Terrestrial radiation elements are found all over; in soil, water, air, and even in the food that we eat, particularly if it is grown in the ground.   The largest contributor to radiation in the natural world, though, is radon which is a decaying product of Uranium, released from rocks and soil.  This gets into our air, as well as our water supply, and we are usually completely unaware of its presence.  Cosmic rays of radiation are another source that we get everyday.  Most of it is blocked by our atmosphere, but not completely.

Then of course there are the ways in which humans are creating more radiation.

US not prepared for 'mega-disaster': official

© AFP/File Mandel Ngan
AFP

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The United States is not as prepared as it should be for a disaster on the scale of the earthquake and tsunami that devastated Japan, a former top emergency response official said Thursday.

"If you ask me if we as a nation are better prepared than we were 40 years ago, five years ago, the answer is yes.

"But if you ask me are we as prepared as we can or should be, the answer to that is, no, we're not," retired Department of Homeland Security inspector general Richard Skinner told a Senate hearing.

Lessons learned from disasters like Hurricane Andrew, which killed 26 people in 1992, Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and the September 11, 2001 attacks should have left the United States "much better prepared than we are today," said Skinner.

Tokyo streets and shops empty – and the air is heavy with fear

After the earthquake, nerves are beginning to fray in Japan's capital following the tsunami and nuclear crisis

The dimmed lights in the normally effervescent neighbourhood of Tokyo were eerily appropriate given the mood on Monday, three days into the greatest test of Japan's resilience as a nation since the second world war.

Darkened streets, petrol rationing, a crippled public transport system and empty supermarket shelves are uncharted territory for a city usually teeming with people accustomed to convenience and abundance. While rescue teams in the Tohoku region uncover hundreds of bodies and officials struggle to cool down a third malfunctioning nuclear reactor 150 miles to the north, all the capital can do is sit tight.

After the gridlock that followed the violent shaking in the city on Friday afternoon, for a moment it seemed that Tokyo would endure little more than momentary inconvenience.

But now nerves are beginning to fray after the killer tsunami and the start of the worst nuclear crisis in the country's postwar history.

Panic Buying: Stocks Of Potassium Iodide Exhausted In U.S.

Editor's Note:  Our principal affiliate, LPC Survival has indeed reported a large backlog of orders.  Please also view Brandon Turbeville's article which highlights at least one alternative to iodide tablets . . . at least for prevention.  We will stay in contact with LPC and report when stock has arrived.

Paul Joseph Watson -- Prison Planet

We are getting numerous reports from readers that stocks of potassium iodide, which is used to protect the body against the effects of nuclear fallout, are completely sold out across the United States. Checks of health supplement websites in the U.S. also confirmed that stocks are completely exhausted.

With the threat of radioactive particles from the stricken Fukushima nuclear reactor complex drifting towards the United States on prevailing easterly winds, many Americans are attempting to protect themselves by acquiring potassium iodide, which protects the thyroid gland from radiation and cancer caused by radioactive iodine.

U.S. manufacturers of potassium iodide have been swamped with demand, reports CNN. One Williamsburg, Virginia-based company “Has received hundreds, if not thousands, of calls from potential buyers in Asia as well as repeat U.S. customers suddenly seeking to replenish their stockpiles of the drug.”

Nature Blowing Its Top and Bottom

Karymsky volcano rumbles away.
Nuclear Dangers and Treatment

Dr. Mark Sircus -- IMVA

Violent eruptions along Russia’s volcano belt are affecting global weather patterns and prices to boot, says this article by Ben Aris. Prepare to pay more for your flour and coal this year. Volcanoes on the country’s eastern seaboard of Kamchatka have been unusually active for the last six months,” says Aris. “The dust they threw up diverted winds in the Arctic, pushing cold air over Europe and North America and causing the unusually cold winter,” say scientists. “This string of volcanoes, 29 of which are active, could cause more problems this year, depressing harvests around the globe just as food prices soar, and culminating in a second freezing winter.” These volcanoes in Russia are not the only volcanoes that are blowing huge tonnages of ash and gases into the atmosphere and when you add them all up, the situation is threatening our climate and agricultural sector.

Not many of us think about what is going on deep beneath our feet but evidence is starting to pile up that our planet is undergoing massive changes underneath us. The quake in Japan from a few days before the most recent terrible one that has spawned a nuclear nightmare had already sent seismographs across the planet reeling into the deep black with some saying that the powerful force of the quake has buckled the seafloor off the far coast of Japan.

Earthquakes and volcanic activity are on the increase around the world signaling, to anyone who is listening, an intensification of earth changes. None of us though had an inkling of what the increasing tremors would bring, first to many Japanese coastal cities like the one below, bringing on a terrible war scale destruction—but also a nuclear catastrophe that is unfolding and threatening to be global in proportion. Letters are already coming in from panicking people on the west coast of North America where jet streams will carry within a few short days, what is being released into the atmosphere at the nuclear facilities in Japan. They want to know how much iodine to take.
image

We all know about the devastating tsunami that hit the coast of northeast Japan on Friday in the aftermath of an 8.9 magnitude earthquake about 80 miles offshore, killing hundreds of people and injuring many more. But 10,000 people are reported missing from this one town above that was completely wiped out. Nightmarish reports and photographs are coming in and it looks like a utterly devastated war zone. Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan is appealing to the Japanese to unite in overcoming what he says is the nation’s worst crisis since World War II.

Now the number is being revised to a 9.1 mega quake. The earthquake triggered widespread power blackouts and, to the horror of an on-looking world, possible meltdowns in several nuclear plants. The world is sitting on the edge of its chair as we wait to see what unfolds. A complete meltdown — the collapse of a power plant’s systems and its ability to keep temperatures under control — would release uranium and dangerous contaminants into the environment and pose major, widespread health risks.

Partial meltdowns are already being reported in two reactors with others still at risk. Officials monitoring the plant in Fukushima have said they detected a radioactive byproduct, cesium, that indicates that a partial meltdown had occurred.

Already as we wake up the news of explosions and contamination at one nuclear plant is flashing around the world. The explosion was preceded by puff of white smoke that gathered intensity until it became a huge cloud enveloping the entire facility, located in Fukushima, 20 miles (30 kilometers) from Iwaki. After the explosion, the walls of the building crumbled, leaving only a skeletal metal frame. Before the explosion, operators had detected eight times the normal radiation levels outside the facility and 1,000 times normal inside Unit 1’s control room. An evacuation area around the plant has been expanded and expanded again as the nuclear threat and contamination spreads.

Eleven of Japan’s 55 reactors are reportedly shut down due to the earthquake. Nuclear authorities in Japan have earlier warned that the Fukushima No. 1 plant, located about 250 km northeast of Tokyo, an urban area of 30 million people.

Kevin Kamps, recently in Japan on a nuclear power-related speaking tour said, “In addition to the reactor cores, the storage pool for highly radioactive irradiated nuclear fuel is also at risk. The pool cooling water must be continuously circulated. Without circulation, the still thermally hot irradiated nuclear fuel in the storage pools will begin to boil off the cooling water. Within a day or two, the pool’s water could completely boil away. Without cooling water, the irradiated nuclear fuel could heat to the point of spontaneously combusting in an exothermic reaction. Since the storage pools are not located within containment, a catastrophic radioactivity release to the environment could occur. Given the large quantity of irradiated nuclear fuel in the pool, the radioactivity release could be worse than the Chernobyl nuclear reactor catastrophe of 25 years ago.”

Kizimen and Sheveluch erupted shortly after the Japanese quake. Explosions at the volcanoes were accompanied by minor earthquakes.
image

Indonesia’s most active volcanoes also erupted hours after a massive earthquake in Japan that triggered a Pacific-wide tsunami. The 5,853-foot (1,784-meter) mountain is located on Siau, part of the Sulawesi island chain. It last erupted in August, killing four people. Indonesia, the world’s largest archipelago, is located on the so-called Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an arc of volcanoes and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.
image

We are facing dramatic seismographic events that seem to be gathering momentum around the world and lo and behold, our fantastic governments have not factored protection into nuclear plants—except for in two plants around the world, which have shock absorbers built around the reactors. In the past 12 months we have seen some huge disasters starting out with the toxic nightmare in the Gulf of Mexico, then devastating and highly toxic fires in Russia, then epic floods in Australia and now this disaster in Japan that is going nuclear in proportion.

The Guardian’s energy editor, Terry Macalister, writes, “I was down at Chernobyl two weeks ago to survey the cleanup there and it was certainly a sobering insight into how devastating an atomic accident can be. The Chernobyl plant is still highly radioactive—25 years after that accident—and far from fully dismantled or decommissioned. The nearby town of Pripyat lies completely empty. 50,000 people were evacuated from there and told they would be back the following weekend. They never returned.”

DNA and Mitochondrial Time Bombs

Uranium and other radioactive materials are highly toxic to humans, both chemically as heavy metals and radiological as alpha particle emitters. Dr. Diane Stearns at Northern Arizona University tells us that separate from any radiation risks, cells exposed to uranium will bond with the metal chemically. Uranium and phosphate have a strong chemical affinity for each other and the DNA and mitochondria are loaded with phosphate so uranium is a DNA and mitochondria deep-penetration bomb.

There are three things that determine the toxicity of radioactive materials:

Chemical effects – Uranium is chemically very toxic.
Radioactive effects (includes half-life and energy released) – One gram of DU (1/20th of a cubic centimeter) releases 13,000 alpha particles a second. One alpha particle can cause cancer under the right conditions and certainly it has the capacity to wreak havoc in beta cells and everywhere else.
Particle size – In the nano particle range (diameter of 0.1 microns or smaller) the particulate effect (non-specific catalyst or enzyme) is far more biologically toxic than the first two effects. This is why DU is so devastating.
The Chernobyl incident was a major humanitarian disaster that has resulted in a plethora of health problems still far from being fully recognized. Most studies analyzing the medical consequences of this catastrophe have so far focused on diseases such as thyroid cancer, leukemia, immune and autoimmune pathology, even though an increase in the incidence of type 1 diabetes mellitus, a disorder involving the immune system, was observed within the residential population of Hiroshima among survivors of the atom bomb detonation. Studies have also shown that thymectomy and a sub-lethal dose of gamma radiation induces type 1 diabetes in rats.

Along the Gulf Coast the oil from the BP blowout 11 months ago continues to roll in along with increasing numbers of dead infant dolphins. The beaches remain polluted with toxic oil and dispersant with unlimited tons of it still being removed. The basic cleanup of the oil has been made impossible by any known technology after the dispersant sank it to the ocean floor. Eight months ago it was Russia that was burning spreading chemical and radioactive contamination from previous nuclear disasters that had been deposited in the soil and forests. China had its own oil nightmare in 2010.

Thus it is not only mega quakes, tsunamis and volcanoes erupting in our faces but mega increases in toxic exposures that are coming to an already badly polluted world. Thousands of tons of mercury are put into the atmosphere each year and that is just the lead Panzer division of a horde of contaminants that are touching down on everyone’s cellular environment.

The United States government insanely developed and used depleted uranium weapons on the battlefield with the resultant blanketing of the earth with uranium oxide with its half-life of billions of years. And humanity is in the middle of an extremely dangerous human experiment with microwave transmissions and wireless technology with mounting evidence leading us to believe that this one toxic insult alone could do our children and grandchildren in from lifetime exposures.

So we are not only threatened with total economic and financial ruin, mass starvation but also with being poisoned to death. Four years ago I previewed our current state of affairs with the publication of my Survival Medicine for the 21st Century compendium of 300 chapters. The point is it already is a fight for survival that is getting more intense with each and every mega disaster of either chemical or radioactive nature.

It well past the time when we have had to become intimately familiar with heavy metal chelation and detoxification methods for both chemical and radioactive threats that already surround us. We also have to begin to prepare for even more dramatic threats that the media and our governmental controllers would prefer we not ponder on.

The beginning point of this essay is on what is happening geologically below our feet and how that is already affecting the agricultural area. In case you need to be reminded our planet is under stress with the entire structure in the beginning process of destabilization.

Japan is at the center being flanked by aggravated tectonic plates and volcanic trenches, pierced by super-volcanic calderas along its southern tip, and dotted with active burning strato-mountains of fire. That’s 55 nuclear reactors in harm’s way in Japan alone. Japan sits at the crossroads of 4 adjoining tectonic plates, the Eurasian, North American, Philippine and Pacific plates. Anyone who is assuming that life is going to be convenient or nice to us at this point does not have their eyes open. The intensity of life’s events is only going to increase from here on so preparation and caution have to be the watchwords of the day.

Please see my important essay – Treatments for Nuclear Contamination and the youtube presentation of Dr. David Brownstein talking about the necessity of high iodine dosages for the entire population. It will be out in a few hours on my blog.
