Ever since March 11, 2011, when the Japanese earthquake rattled the Asian country, there have been increasing numbers of strange coincidences involving nuclear power plants, natural disasters, and mismanagement of facilities. I say strange coincidences, because it now appears that nuclear power plants fall into the same category as the recent earthquakes that seem to be increasing in frequency and proximity to highly populated areas, as well as tornadoes that seem to be doing the same.

As for the Japanese situation, after months of claims by both the Japanese and American “authorities,” as well as the mainstream media that the situation in Japan was not as serious as “conspiracy theorists” were making it out to be, the Japanese Nuclear Emergency Response Headquarters has finally been forced to admit that at least three of the nuclear reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant had, indeed, melted down

Two more potential nuclear disasters in the United States

On top of Fort Calhoun and the Cooper Nuclear Station, two more facilities housing nuclear materials are now at risk. Of course the mainstream media is all but totally silent on this issue as it is a bit worrisome for people to think about fourplants on the brink of potential nuclear disaster. Not to mention the worst industrial disaster of all time, Fukushima, that continues to spew radioactive particles into the air, groundwater, and ocean.

What should concern the people of America is not just that there is a possibility that there could be a nuclear disaster in the continental United States, but that we can expect the engineers and regulatory bodies to react as they did at Fukushima. This is a grim thought, because it has now become clear that, according to the Dean of Engineering at the University of Melbourne, Dr. Iven Mareels, “Engineers likely understood [Fukushima] containment breached immediately.” You wouldn’t be out of line in wondering if the same exact tragic events might repeat themselves here in America.

It’s been labeled the worst environmental disaster in world history, and rightfully so, because the British Petroleum (BP) oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is like the nightmarish gift that keeps on giving.

On April 20, 2010, the Macondo well blew out resulting in the loss of 11 lives, sank the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig and spilled an estimated five million barrels of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico. BP’s swath of destruction has included the decimation of the welfare, livelihoods, health and futures of tens of millions of Gulf Coast residents, not to mention the destruction of the fragile ecology in the Gulf of Mexico.

This is first of a multi-part series which answer questions in five specific areas related to the oil spill with regard to the actions of BP, its corporate Gulf Coast partners and the federal government before, during and after the catastrophe. These areas of inquiry include the following:

Ft. Calhoun: A Nightmare Scenario

Before It's News

We better be thinking ahead at this point. If it's not outright sabatoge going on in Nebraska it might as well be. The news blackout and no-fly zone and usual downplaying assurances tell you all you need to know anyway.

If Calhoun melts down the contamination will be catastrophic, estimated by some to potentially be as much as 20 Fukushimas due to all the fuel rods being stored there. Smart.

But this time there's no ocean to cross.

And Who's Downwind?

Update By Alex Thomas – 30,000 Barrels of Plutonium Stored At Los Alamos nuclear laboratory?

Concerned Citizens For Nuclear Safety, an anti-nuclear watchdog group, has reported that over 30,000 barrels of  plutonium contaminated waste is being stored in tents ABOVE ground near the Los Alamos National Laboratory.

These barrels may be in danger due to a massive fire that has been quoted as, “entirely uncontained and highly unpredictable.”

“The weather forecast for Los Alamos predicts the wind through Tuesday afternoon will be from the southeast, then switching from the southwest at 11-18 mph with minimum humidities in the lower teens. This could encourage the fire to move closer to Los Alamos,” reported Wildfiretoday.com.
This is absolutely critical information that was given one paragraph in the corporate controlled media.

Government officials have been quick to claim that the situation does not pose a risk to public health and while we all hope they are right, it is the job of the press to MAKE SURE.

Agent Orange dioxin contamination is not only about the increased risk of deadly and exotic cancers.  A long list of human and animal diseases has been positively linked to dioxins including damaged DNA, neurological diseases, birth defects, autism, and learning disabilities.

In 2009, Veterans For Peace passed 2 resolutions in support of HR 2254 and HR 1428 to address thousands of service-connected disabilities of Parkinson's Disease due to exposure to Agent Orange.

Agent Orange was illegally sprayed as chemical aerosols by US military aircraft over civilians, villages, jungles and farms.  The poisonous chemicals were illegally and criminally sprayed over Vietnam and three more countries for which Congress had not authorized funds for military actions including Cambodia, Laos and Thailand.

A flood wall at the Fort Calhoun Nuclear Power Plant has failed, leading many to speculate as to the consequences.

Omaha.com

"Floodwaters surrounded several buildings at the Fort Calhoun Nuclear Station early Sunday morning after a water-filled wall collapsed.

The plant, about 19 miles north of Omaha, remains safe, Omaha Public Power District officials said Sunday afternoon.

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission is monitoring the Missouri River at the plant, which has been shut down since early April for refueling.

The 2,000-foot berm collapsed about 1:25 a.m. Sunday due to 'onsite activities,' OPPD officials said. The Aqua Dam provided supplemental flood protection and was not required under NRC regulations."

Considering the fact that the NRC has a long history of cover ups, it seems safe to say that whether or not the plant was safe, the NRC would claim the situation is under control.

New Madrid's Giant Pipeline Bomb

Before It's News

We've heard a lot about the New Madrid Fault. Despite the dangers and warnings, the area continues to be flooded, fracked, drilled, HAARPed and tornadoed, all while being home to 15 nuclear reactors.

As if that's not enough, there's also a little known factor that will really make your hair stand on end.

The fault zone is criss-crossed with major gas and oil pipelines delivering these volatile energy sources all over the United States.
This company (ProLiance Energy) delivers Billions of cubic feet of gas per year through 19 major pipelines. Note how the pipelines cross the New Madrid Seismic Zone.

"You have four of the five major natural-gas pipelines come right through the soup in New Madrid, the soft alluvial soil," says Gray. "They carry gas all the way to Detroit, Chicago, Indianapolis and Pittsburgh. If (the earthquake) happened during the winter, you're going to have major-league problems on your hands. Try to explain to somebody why you cannot heat a nursing home or keep a hospital warm." -- Ed Gray, Missouri State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA)
 Riverfront Times

An earthquake in the middle of the country, along the precarious New Madrid fault, could have enormous fiscal and energy consequences. "Virtually every natural gas pipeline in the nation is built over that fault," Geller says. "You'll see the explosion reflected off the moon." --insurancenewsnet.com

Oceans in distress foreshadow mass extinction

Contaminated Waikiki Beach - Wiki Image
AFP - Raw Story

PARIS (AFP) – Pollution and global warming are pushing the world's oceans to the brink of a mass extinction of marine life unseen for tens of millions of years, a consortium of scientists warned Monday.

Dying coral reefs, biodiversity ravaged by invasive species, expanding open-water "dead zones," toxic algae blooms, the massive depletion of big fish stocks -- all are accelerating, they said in a report compiled during an April meeting in Oxford of 27 of the world's top ocean experts.

Sponsored by the International Programme on the State of the Ocean (IPSO), the review of recent science found that ocean health has declined further and faster than dire forecasts only a few years ago.

These symptoms, moreover, could be the harbinger of wider disruptions in the interlocking web of biological and chemical interactions that scientists now call the Earth system.

Radioactive tritium leaks found at 48 US nuke sites

'You got pipes that have been buried underground for 30 or 40 years, and they've never been inspected,' whistleblower says

Associated Press

Radioactive tritium has leaked from three-quarters of U.S. commercial nuclear power sites, often into groundwater from corroded, buried piping, an Associated Press investigation shows.

The number and severity of the leaks has been escalating, even as federal regulators extend the licenses of more and more reactors across the nation.

Tritium, which is a radioactive form of hydrogen, has leaked from at least 48 of 65 sites, according to U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission records reviewed as part of the AP's yearlong examination of safety issues at aging nuclear power plants.

Leaks from at least 37 of those facilities contained concentrations exceeding the federal drinking water standard — sometimes at hundreds of times the limit.

Fast Breeder Reactor Monju in Japan - Wiki Image

The New York Times

TSURUGA, Japan — Three hundred miles southwest of Fukushima, at a nuclear reactor perched on the slopes of this rustic peninsula, engineers are engaged in another precarious struggle.

The Monju prototype fast-breeder reactor — a long-troubled national project — has been in a precarious state of shutdown since a 3.3-ton device crashed into the reactor’s inner vessel, cutting off access to the plutonium and uranium fuel rods at its core.

Engineers have tried in vain since the accident last August to recover the device, which appears to have gotten stuck. They will make another attempt as early as next week.

But critics warn that the recovery process is fraught with dangers because the plant uses large quantities of liquid sodium, a highly flammable substance, to cool the nuclear fuel.

The Monju reactor, which forms the cornerstone of a national project by resource-poor Japan to reuse and eventually produce nuclear fuel, shows the tensions between the scale of Japan’s nuclear ambitions and the risks.

Here in the above video we are looking at nuclear hell on earth, a night film of the radioactive steam that continues to rise from Fukushima 24 hours a day. Arnie Gundersen, a former nuclear power industry executive, is one of the experts who has been saying from day one that the nuclear crisis in Japan was much worse than they were telling us.

He was absolutely correct. Finally, three months later we are getting some numbers on what the real dangers are. And finally we can begin to understand the enormous cover-up of the nuclear doom that is reaching lungs all over the west coast of America, Canada, Alaska, Hawaii and at least half of Japan! For infants it’s a terrible valley of death we have created for them. As we shall see for years all of them have been born with already polluted bloodstreams and now the very young ones are dying in greater numbers on the west coast of the United States since Fukushima blew up.

Just Can’t Run: Seattle Residents Breathing Fukushima Radiation (Video)

Former nuclear power industry executive and chief engineer of energy consulting company Fairewinds Associates told CNN earlier this week that residents of Seattle, Washington, are breathing ten “hot particles” per day of Fukushima radiation.

Hot particles are small, highly radioactive, and contain large amounts of radionuclides. They present significant health hazard when they enter the human body and are several orders of magnitude more dangerous than the same amount of radiation emitted from a large source over the whole body because if ingested or inhaled, they do damage to cells at close proximity, according to the Journal of Radiological Protection.

Corporate Profit Versus Life On Earth

Related Posts Plugin for WordPress, Blogger...

Rand Clifford

The last year has been especially catastrophic for life on Earth, while at the same time, corporate profits have jumped a staggering 36.8%, setting all-time records. Is this a coincidence, or are the long-term implications as sinister as they might seem?

How many disasters like the massive poisoning of the Gulf of Mexico, or gushing of radiation from multiple reactor-core meltdowns in Japan can the biosphere take? Or, perhaps a more apropos question is: How much more profit will the biosphere survive?

Two things the catastrophes in the Gulf and at Fukushima have in common is that both were at the hands of corporations, and both involved extensive disinformation, misinformation, and severe suppression of information. Just like governments, which are virtually all corporate “assets”, corporations themselves shun the light of day.

Fukushima Reactor No. 1 more radioactive than ever

Dees Illustration
David Ferguson
Raw Story

At the stricken Fukushima nuclear power plant, a robot sent into the building housing Reactor No. 1 on Saturday detected the highest levels of radiation measured since the crisis began on March 11.

According to the Japan Times, The Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) reported that radiation levels in the air around Reactor 1 were at 4000 millisieverts per hour, an exposure level equivalent to approximately 40,000 chest x-rays. TEPCO says it has no plans to send workers into the area because of its dangerously high radioactivity.

On Friday, a spokesman for TEPCO announced that steam was rising from underneath the reactor building. That afternoon, Japanese national television carried blurry footage of smoke rising from an opening in the floor.

Underneath the reactor, an estimated 40,000 tons of "highly contaminated" radioactive water have collected in what is known as the pressure suppression containment vessel, and it's this water that is believed to be producing the steam. TEPCO officials warn that the water will begin to overflow from the storage vessel by June 20 as it reaches its maximum capacity, sooner if there are heavy rains.

Japan: green tea exports banned due to high radiation levels

The Japanese government has banned shipments of green tea leaves in four regions after high levels of radioactive caesium were found.

Danielle Demetriou
The Telegraph

A swathe of Japan's tea making regions including parts of Tochigi, Chiba and Kanagawa prefecture as well as the whole of Ibaraki were included within the ban, according to the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare.

Green tea plantations were first highlighted as suffering from potential radiation contamination last month following the results of sample tests in Kanagawa prefecture.
The authorities discovered around 570 becquerels of caesium per kilogram in leaves grown in the city of Minamiashigara – compared to the legal limit of 500 – and started a recall of tea products.

Factory Farms Produce 100 Times More Waste Than All People In the US Combined

"Factory farms are dangerous to the environment; they are ticking time bombs of manure just waiting to be spilled into public waters."

Jill Richardson
AlterNet

The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals recently delivered a major victory to factory farms. Under a 2008 EPA rule, any confined animal feeding operation (CAFO) "designed, constructed, operated, and maintained in a manner such that the CAFO will discharge" animal waste must apply for a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit under the Clean Water Act. The livestock industry ridiculed the notion that a farm must apply for a permit to discharge manure whether it intended to discharge it or not. And while, when phrased that way, it might sound ridiculous to you too, the details of the case betray a different story.

David Kirby, author of Animal Factory, The Looming Threat of Industrial Pig, Dairy, and Poultry Farms to Humans and the Environment, tells story after story in his book of factory farms discharging waste irresponsibly -- sometimes on purpose, and sometimes not. As Karen Hudson, whose story is told in the book, says, "Factory farms are dangerous to the environment; they are ticking time bombs of manure just waiting to be spilled into public waters."

RadNet: EPA's Failed Radiation Detection System

Related Posts Plugin for WordPress, Blogger...
RadNet has a no-bid maintenance contract to former Department of Defense under-secretary

PSTUPH

RadNet – the EPA’s front-line, radiological detection network is severely flawed and suffers from maintenance and reliability issues.

The lack of consistent data and the number of units offline (a techie term for broken) at the time they were most needed shows that the EPA was not prepared for this emergency.

Besides that fact the broken system left us all unprotected; the confusion, apprehension and fear witnessed as people try to wade through the incomplete and inaccurate data online is evidenced byan exchange on the UC Berkely website over this RadNet graph:

The graph shows that this monitoring station was one of the units actually running on  3/11 . The readings were significantly higher prior to 3/11 and drop to a much lower level  afterwards. This is an indication that the units were running in an uncalibrated condition and were adjusted only after the events at Fukushima.

Who is responsible for assuring that the system is up and running?  The EPA contracted this responsibility to a private company, Environmental Dimensions, Inc.

Environmental Dimensions, Inc (EDI) has provided maintenance for EPA’s RadNet monitoring systems under a sole source contract which can be viewed at the end of this article. The base amount of the contract is $238,000.00. This does not include materials and travel, which is billed back to the government as needed.
