US lawmakers file suit over Obama's Libya war

WASHINGTON (AFP) -  The White House will deliver a report to Congress Wednesday explaining its involvement in Libya, as a bipartisan group of lawmakers filed suit charging US military action in the war-torn nation is unconstitutional.

The report will include legal analysis arguing that President Barack Obama did not overstep his powers in the conflict in the north African nation.

"The president has acted in a manner that is consistent with the War Powers Resolution," White House spokesman Jay Carney said, arguing the 30-page report would show the "success" of the mission to protect Libyan civilians.

Obama's Libya policy fell under the spotlight in court as anti-war Democratic Representative Dennis Kucinich filed the lawsuit challenging what it described as the Obama administration's circumvention of Congress in using military force in a protracted effort to oust longtime ruler Moamer Kadhafi.

"With regard to the war in Libya, we believe that the law was violated. We have asked the courts to move to protect the American people from the results of these illegal policies," said Kucinich, who was joined in the suit by nine other House members including Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul.

Kucinich: Fake Taliban Leader, Fake Elections, Fake Deadline, Real Trouble

Afghanistan War, Nightmare without End for Troops, Innocent Civilians and US Taxpayers

Congressman Dennis J. Kucinich, a leading proponent of peace, today renewed his call to end the Afghan war after it was revealed that a self-proclaimed senior Taliban negotiator working with President Hamid Karzai and NATO officials was in an imposter.

“The war in Afghanistan is taking place in a netherworld where facts and common sense have no place. Elections are fake. Our deadline to withdraw is a fake.  Now, we learn that a fake Taliban leader has been leading us to believe that NATO was facilitating high-level talks between Taliban leadership and the corrupt Afghan central government we’re propping up.  It was truly amazing that our government said we were negotiating with high-level Taliban leadership while at the same time we were stepping up air strikes to wipe them out.

“Evidence abounds that the Karzai regime in Kabul is among the most corrupt in the world.  President Karzai rules through crony capitalism.  He works to protect his cronies rather than the Afghan people. Our tax dollars are going to the Karzai family and its supporters to buy villas in Dubai. We know that our tax dollars fund both sides of the conflict.  We know that our ‘allies’ pay the enemy not to attack our troops and that they also may be bribing insurgents to attack our troops.   We also know that U.S. tax dollars fund Afghan warlords.  NATO officials have become so skilled in self-deception that a senior NATO official recently claimed that Kabul is safer for children than most western cities. Meanwhile those who continue to advocate for the war apply the dark arts of  public relations to manufacture support for a war which is neither winnable, nor moral nor sane.  It is time for Congress to start asking General Petraeus some direct questions.

“The War in Afghanistan is longer than any other war America has ever fought. It has cost U.S. taxpayers more than a trillion dollars. More than 1300 Americans have died, thousands more wounded. Countless innocent Afghan civilians have died.   “The only real thing about this war is the dead and wounded soldiers and civilians, the wasted tax dollars and the mounting evidence telling us to get out.”

Iraqi prisoners were abused at 'UK's Abu Ghraib', court hears

The Guardian

Evidence of the alleged systematic and brutal mistreatment of Iraqi prisoners at a secret British military interrogation centre that is being described as "the UK's Abu Ghraib" emerged yesterday during high court proceedings brought by more than 200 former inmates.

The court was told there was evidence that detainees were starved, deprived of sleep, subjected to sensory deprivation and threatened with execution at the shadowy facilities near Basra operated by the Joint Forces Interrogation Team, or JFIT.

It also received allegations that JFIT's prisoners were beaten, forced to kneel in stressful positions for up to 30 hours at a time, and that some were subjected to electric shocks. Some of the prisoners say that they were subject to sexual humiliation by women soldiers, while others allege that they were held for days in cells as small as one metre square.

34 warships sent from US for Obama visit

NDTV

New Delhi:  The White House will, of course, stay in Washington but the heart of the famous building will move to India when President Barack Obama lands in Mumbai on Saturday.

Communications set-up, nuclear button, a fleet of limousines and majority of the White House staff will be in India accompanying the President on this three-day visit that will cover Mumbai and Delhi.

He will also be protected by a fleet of 34 warships, including an aircraft carrier, which will patrol the sea lanes off the Mumbai coast during his two-day stay there beginning Saturday. The measure has been taken as Mumbai attack in 2008 took place from the sea.

Arrangements have been put in place for emergency evacuation, if needed.

Marijuana legalization measure loses in California

Lisa Leff
Associated Press

LOS ANGELES – California voters declined to make their trendsetting state the nation's first to legalize marijuana use and sales, heeding warnings of legal chaos and that pot smokers would get behind the wheel and show up to work while high.

The legalization effort was losing by nine percentage points with more than two-thirds of precincts reporting. Backers showed support for the measure by gathering outside the campaign's headquarters to watch returns come in — some of them lighting up joints to mark the occasion.

Supporters of Proposition 19 blamed Tuesday's outcome on the conservative leanings of older voters who participate in midterm elections. They also acknowledged that young voters had not turned out in sufficient numbers to secure victory, but said they were ready to try again in two years.

"It's still a historic moment in this very long struggle to end decades of failed marijuana prohibition," said Stephen Gutwillig, California director for the Drug Policy Project. "Unquestionably, because of Proposition 19, marijuana legalization initiatives will be on the ballot in a number of states in 2012, and California is in the mix."

Tim Rosales, who managed the No on 19 campaign, scoffed at that attitude from the losing side.

How the 2010 election results will affect health care and health freedom

Mike Adams
Natural News

In what appears to be a broad backlash against Obama-era policies, U.S. voters swept Republicans into office in record numbers in last night's election. As of this writing, Republicans had clearly taken the House but failed to win a majority in the Senate. This effectively ends the Democratic super-majority alignment among the House, Senate and White House.

So what will this mean for health-conscious consumers and medical patients? Will this result in any improvements on the health freedom front?

A clue is found in the behavior of Big Pharma and health insurance companies. Even before the election was over, they were already focusing new efforts on lobbying Republicans, according to the Wall Street Journal (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB100...).

The medical industry, you seem doesn't care whether Democrats or Republicans are in office. It can buy influence with either party. Remember, it was the Bush Administration that handed Big Pharma a Medicare drug monopoly. Obama merely expanded and extended that monopoly with Obamacare health reform.

Ballot measures challenge federal health insurance mandates

In two states -- Colorado and Arizona -- voters weighed in on ballot measures designed to effectively block federal mandates that will force citizens to buy health insurance (or be penalized by the IRS).

Arizona's Proposition 106 appears to have passed, meaning that Arizona will soon find itself in a Tenth Amendment showdown with the federal governmentover whether the feds can force Arizona citizens to buy federally-mandated health insurance. (Gee, the fact that we're even talking about this show you just how overreaching the federal government has become the days, doesn't it?)

In Colorado, Amendment 63 appears to have been defeated. Sadly, this means the state is surrendering its citizens over to the interventions of federally-run Obamacare regulations. Colorado has apparently forgotten that all-important part of the Bill of Rights which says, "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."

That's the Tenth Amendment, of course. But even this amendment seems increasingly irrelevant to a federal government that chooses to ignore all the amendments in the Bill of Rights.
