You Are Being Programmed to Accept the Global ID Control Grid

By James Corbett

Half a century ago people had to be reassured their social security card was not being used for identification. Now there are federally standardized and globally synchronized ID cards, government-sponsored online ID projects, DNA databases, and even secret databases of your newborn baby's genetic information and nobody bats an eyelid. How did we get here, and how can we break this conditioning?

John McAfee: Stop Trading Privacy for the Illusion of Security

By Andrew Demeter

Andrew Demeter of Teen Take interviews the world's most interesting man, John McAfee, on issues of privacy and security. "Security is an illusion... We don't get out of life alive — none of us, so there can be no absolute security. That's the certainty," McAfee told Demeter.

He also explained why privacy is so important. "Without privacy in society, there would be chaos."

All the Creepy Ways Big Brother Is Watching You

John W. Whitehead

“You had to live—did live, from habit that became instinct—in the assumption that every sound you made was overheard, and, except in darkness, every movement scrutinized.”—George Orwell,1984

None of us are perfect. All of us bend the rules occasionally. Even before the age of overcriminalization, when the most upstanding citizen could be counted on to break at least three laws a day without knowing it, most of us have knowingly flouted the law from time to time.

Indeed, there was a time when most Americans thought nothing of driving a few miles over the speed limit, pausing (rather than coming to a full stop) at a red light when making a right-hand turn if no one was around, jaywalking across the street, and letting their kid play hookie from school once in a while. Of course, that was before the era of speed cameras that ticket you for going even a mile over the posted limit, red light cameras that fine you for making safe “rolling stop” right-hand turns on red, surveillance cameras equipped with facial recognition software mounted on street corners, and school truancy laws that fine parents for “unexcused” absences.

My, how times have changed.

Utah Bill Would Turn Off Water to NSA Data Center

By Tenth Amendment Center

A bill filed in the Utah state house yesterday would deny critical resources - like water - to the massive NSA data center there should it pass. House Bill 150 (HB150), introduced by Rep. Marc Roberts, would require that the water being supplied to the NSA’s data center in Bluffdale be shut off as soon as the city’s $3 million bond is paid off.

How Wearable Smart Tech Will Control Your Life

Aaron Dykes and Melissa Melton

Privacy? What’s that?

IF you take your cues from propaganda outlets like TIME, wearable technology is what’s next in our lives and in a big way. Simply carrying around a cellphone — which is really a complicated mini-computer in and of itself — won’t be fashionable or sensible for much longer.

As the likes of futurist Ray Kurzweil and others have long been predicting, wearable wrist-watch and eyeglass style wi-fi units (and eventually implantables) will be the new mediary between “Us” and “The Net.” From lulling us to sleep to waking us up, monitoring everything we are datawise including our heartbeats, calorie intake, hydration level and other vital stats to coaching our exercise to becoming an ever-mindful business secretary and digital wallet, these wearables will do more (and thus, invade our very existence) than SMART phones ever could…

Calling All Hackers: Help Us Build an Open Wireless Router

Peter Echersley, Jacob Hoffman-Andrews, and Ranga Krishnan
EFF

EFF is releasing an experimental hacker alpha release of wireless router software specifically designed to support secure, shareable Open Wireless networks. We will be officially launching the Open Wireless Router today at the HOPE X (Hackers on Planet Earth) conference in New York City, aiming to bring aboard members of the hacker community. This release is a work in progress and is intended only for developers and people willing to deal with the bleeding edge.

The software aims to do several things that existing routers don't do well—or don't do at all. We are beginning a journey that we hope will attract supporters and fellow travelers to help reach the following goals:1

  • Allow small business and home users to easily enable an open network, so guests and passersby can get an Internet connection if they need one, while keeping a password-locked WPA2 network for themselves and their friends or coworkers.
  • Let you share a bounded portion of your bandwidth on the open network, so guest users cannot slow down your Internet connection or use a large portion of your monthly quota.2

Police Play NSA: Warrantless Data Collection the New Normal?

ReasonTV

Sacramento sheriff's deputies have been playing NSA. They tool around town with suitcase-sized StingRay surveillance devices in their squad cars, scooping up cellphone data from whomever happens to be within a one-mile radius. The deputies have reportedly been doing their shady business without warrants, and dozens of law enforcement agencies nationwide may be doing likewise.

But hey, what's the big deal? After all, the feds say it's OK.

A Christmas Message from Edward Snowden

Related Posts Plugin for WordPress, Blogger...

Edward Snowden’s alternative Christmas message demanding an end to mass surveillance was broadcast at 4:15 p.m. GMT. Original post follows below the video.

British television’s Channel 4, known for broadcasting “unusual but relevant” figures’ holiday messages as opposed to the Queen of England’s annual speech, has chosen whistle-blower Edward Snowden to convey this year’s address.

Snowden, who is responsible for opening our eyes to the omnipresence of the National Security Agency’s surveillance, was recorded by filmmaker Laura Poitras in Russia where he’s been granted temporary asylum. Poitras and journalist Glenn Greenwald have helped Snowden leak NSA documents and are now starting a news website funded by eBay founder Pierre Omidyar.
Although Snowden’s dispatch isn’t scheduled to appear on television until Wednesday afternoon, The Guardian has collected some snippets that have been televised in advance:
In excerpts from the address released by Channel 4, Snowden says George Orwell “warned us of the danger of this kind of information” in his dystopian novel, 1984.
Snowden says: “The types of collection in the book – microphones and video cameras, TVs that watch us – are nothing compared to what we have available today. We have sensors in our pockets that track us everywhere we go. Think about what this means for the privacy of the average person.
“A child born today will grow up with no conception of privacy at all. They’ll never know what it means to have a private moment to themselves an unrecorded, unanalysed thought. And that’s a problem because privacy matters; privacy is what allows us to determine who we are and who we want to be.”
In the other extract of the address released, Snowden notes the political changes that have taken place since his leaked the cache documents to newspapers including the Guardian. He highlights a review of the NSA’s power that recommended it be no longer permitted to collect phone records in bulk or undermine internet security, findings endorsed in part by Barack Obama, and a federal judge’s ruling that bulk phone record collection is likely to violate the US constitution.
Snowden says: “The conversation occurring today will determine the amount of trust we can place both in the technology that surrounds us and the government that regulates it. Together we can find a better balance, end mass surveillance and remind the government that if it really wants to know how we feel, asking is always cheaper than spying.”
The whistle-blower’s message, though filmed and broadcast on another continent, comes across crystal clear, especially his words on the conversation that wouldn’t be possible today were it not for his efforts to inform society of the NSA’s unjust methods. Now, as Snowden explains, it’s our turn to effect change side by side and alter our dystopian reality.

The Department of Homeland Security's latest surveillance tool is the Biometric Optical Surveillance System, or BOSS, and consists of two cameras that are capable of taking stereoscopic images of people's faces. Facial recognition technology matches the 3-D pictures captured and compares them to images stored in the system's database, like driver's license photos.

New Court Ruling Makes it Easier for Police to Track Your Cell Phone

A Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals ruling this week will make it easier for police to track your movements through your cell phone after the court decided police aren't required to obtain a search warrant to track you.

The case involved a 2010 law enforcement request to obtain 60 days of cell phone location records from two cell phone companies. The government wanted to identify which cell phone towers a particular phone number had connected to in order to place a suspect at the scene of a crime, and submitted a request under the Stored Communication Act ("SCA") for access. The magistrate judge denied the request, understanding that records revealing your daily movements could show where you worship, what your medical conditions might be, and what political issues might interest you, not to mention who your friends and family are. It therefore rightfully ordered the government to apply for a search warrant supported by probable cause before accessing this sensitive data.

Former SEC attorney: government claims it will protect your data but ‘it cannot honor that promise’

According to a former attorney for the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), despite the government’s claims that it will protect your private data, it simply “cannot honor that promise.”

This is especially troubling given the growing presence of centralized systems in which massive amounts of private information is held, such as the Federal Services Data Hubauthorized by the Affordable Care Act, better known as Obamacare.

The statement was made by Hester Peirce, who currently serves as a senior research fellow at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University, and previously served as senior counsel to Senator Richard Shelby’s staff on the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs.

America's Surveillance Society

Stephen Lendman

It's not new. It's longstanding. State-of-the-art technology makes it easy. It's more intrusive than ever. It's lawlessly out-of-control.

On July 6, The New York Times Times headlined "In Secret, Court Vastly Broadens Powers of NSA," saying:

More than a dozen Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC) 'classified rulings created a secret body of law giving the (NSA) power to amass vast collections of data on Americans while (allegedly) pursuing not only terrorism suspects, but also people possibly involved in nuclear proliferation, espionage, and cyberattacks, officials say.'
More on this below. Spying is the national pastime. Legal standards no longer apply. Anything goes is policy. America's a total surveillance society. Big Brother more than ever is real.

It's "time to rein in the surveillance state," said ACLU. It "strikes at the core of our right to free speech, association and privacy."
