Public health officials have been squaring off with anti-vaccination advocates in the wake of the recent measles outbreak that sickened dozens of Disneyland visitors. To stem the disease’s spread, California lawmakers have introduced new legislation mandating vaccinations for young children, but so-called ‘anti-vaxxers’ believe the move is an infringement of their most basic freedoms. Dr. David Katz, Director of Yale Prevention Research Center, and Mark Blaxill of the Canary Party debate the real issues over MMR vaccines.

Parents of capitol bombing suspect accuse FBI of illegal setup

The parents of a 20-year-old Ohio man recently accused of plotting to bomb the US capitol are accusing the FBI of coercing their son into the terroristic plan. A litany of cases in which federal authorities find susceptible individuals and then push them into illegal plans exist, but in most terrorism prosecutions, little information about law enforcement’s role is never made publicly available. Could this be another example of the FBI entrapping a citizen?

Civil Unrest Breaks out in MO After Cop Kills Unarmed Teen

Civil strife broke out in St. Louis this weekend after a police officer was seen fatally shooting an unarmed African American teen from behind as he fled.

According to Fox News, 18-year-old Michael Brown was fatally shot in broad daylight by police last Saturday in St. Louis while walking to his grandmother’s house.Eyewitness reports allege that the teenager was unarmed, fleeing, and had his hands held high when an unidentified officer from the St. Louis-area Ferguson Police Department opened fire multiple times, killing him.

On Tuesday, after accusing the Kremlin of supporting anti-Kiev militias in eastern Ukraine, and threatening to cripple the Russian economy, the United States, along with the 28 nations that comprise the European Union, announced a new series of sanctions against Moscow that could take place as early as August 1, 2014.

According to The Washington Post, the European measures were “the strongest against Russia since the Cold War, with the potential to sway Russian decision-making in a way that previous penalties have not.”

Historic Battle of Athens Sheriff’s Department Gets Military Makeover

Fast forwarding to the present day, Nashville’s News Channel 5 is reporting that police militarization has erupted into a full-blown scandal in Tennessee. Under the Department of Defense’s surplus weapons program, Tennessee police departments have received an unusually huge order of military weapons including grenade launchers, M-16s, and Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles. As an example, the rural McMinn County Sheriff’s Department, once coincidentally the focus of the historic Battle of Athens, was mistakenly given over five military weapons per person, despite only having 31 officers. Said McMinn County Sheriff Guy of the shipment, “Well, we don’t need this many. There was a little error in the order… They’re here as our department grows. We’ll have additional firearms for future officers.” It’s worth noting that DOD rules require police departments to return unnecessary surplus weapons. Due to this mistake, it is likely that the McMinn County Sheriff’s Department is now one of the most militarized sheriff’s departments in the United States.
