CIA-Crack Cocaine Conspiracy Exposed in "Kill The Messenger"

Focus Features

Two-time Academy Award nominee Jeremy Renner leads an all-star cast in a dramatic thriller based on the remarkable true story of Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Gary Webb. Webb stumbles onto a story which leads to the shady origins of the men who started the crack epidemic on the nation's streets...and further alleges that the CIA was aware of major dealers who were smuggling cocaine into the U.S., and using the profits to arm rebels fighting in Nicaragua. Despite warnings from drug kingpins and CIA operatives to stop his investigation, Webb keeps digging to uncover a conspiracy with explosive implications. His journey takes him from the prisons of California to the villages of Nicaragua to the highest corridors of power in Washington, D.C. -- and draws the kind of attention that threatens not just his career, but his family and his life.

Real-Time Community News App in Development for Citizen Journalists

Making the unique freedom of speech and privacy laws of Finland available to the rest of the world.

Activist Post

The decentralization of technology is a key component in overcoming restrictions imposed by governments upon independent media. Recently, we all have witnessed the heavy-handed approach law enforcement has taken again the citizens of Ferguson, even going so far as to apparently use a kill-switch during one particularly chaotic moment.

We also see how social media is often used by the establishment to gather data and predict behavior, while our smart gadgets have become windows into our private lives. This needs to be turned upside down; we cannot be afraid to use the tools at our disposal, but they must be reconfigured so that our social activity is being utilized in the most constructive way possible.

A new map-based news app called Vews is in development that aims to offer an easy-to-use citizen journalism platform that lets you know in real time - near or far - where news events are taking place so that you can get involved. It is wrapped within the framework of non-censorship and privacy that has made Finland #1 in press freedom worldwide. The video below offers additional details.

Cell Phone Guide For US Protesters

Eva Galperin & Parker Higgins
EFF

With major protests in the news again, we decided it's time to update our cell phone guide for protesters. A lot has changed since we last published this report in 2011, for better and for worse. On the one hand, we've learned more about the massive volume of law enforcement requests for cell phone—ranging from location information to actual content—and widespread use of dedicated cell phone surveillance technologies. On the other hand, strong Supreme Court opinions have eliminated any ambiguity about the unconstitutionality of warrantless searches of phones incident to arrest, and a growing national consensus says location data, too, is private.

Protesters want to be able to communicate, to document the protests, and to share photos and video with the world. So they'll be carrying phones, and they'll face a complex set of considerations about the privacy of the data those phones hold. We hope this guide can help answer some questions about how to best protect that data, and what rights protesters have in the face of police demands.

CNN Interview with RT Anchor Explodes: ‘You’re Supposed to Be a Journalist!’

CNN New Day host Chris Cuomo, who’s been reporting from Ukraine this week, got into an explosive dozen-minute shouting match with RT anchor Peter Lavelle Wednesday morning, as the two men largely yelled past each other over Russia’s culpability in the downing of flight MH17 and the evidence since offered by western powers.
Cuomo asked Lavelle why Putin had allowed the crime scene to so deteriorate, while Lavelle argued that Putin had no control over a foreign country’s territory. The two fought over the existence of the west’s evidence that Moscow-backed Ukrainian separatists fired the missile that took down the plane, with Lavelle claiming it came from “Twitter.”
“The U.S. government condemned Russia before the bodies were even off the ground,” Lavelle said. “What kind of logic is that?… U.S intelligence has no idea what it’s talking about. Or it knows what happens and it doesn’t want the world to find out what really happened.”  Watch Video

Congress and the Justice Dept's Dangerous Attempts to Define “Journalist” Threaten to Exclude Bloggers

Lawmakers in Washington are again weighing in on who should and should not qualify as a journalist—and the outcome looks pretty grim for bloggers, freelancers, and other non-salaried journalists.

On July 12, the Justice Department released its new guidelines on investigations involving the news media in the wake of the fallout from the leak scandals involving the monitoring of AP and Fox News reporters. While the guidelines certainly provide much-needed protections for establishment journalists, as independent journalist Marcy Wheeler explained, the DOJ’s interpretation of who is a “member[] of the news media” is dramatically narrower than the definition provided in the Privacy Protection Act and effectively excludes bloggers and freelancers from protection. This limiting definition is causing alarm among bloggers like Glenn Reynolds on the right as well.

While the DOJ’s effort to limit the scope of who can be recognized as a journalist is problematic, it doesn’t have teeth. Guidelines are, well, guidelines. But the report is part of a broader legislative effort in Washington to simultaneously offer protection for the press while narrowing the scope of who is afforded it. Importantly, Congress introduced federal shield bills in May—both ironically named the “Free Flow of Information Act of 2013”—that arguably would exclude bloggers, freelancers, and other non-salaried journalists from protection because they are not included within the bills’ narrow definition of who qualifies as a journalist.

If these bills—support for which the White House reaffirmed in its DOJ report—pass without change, Congress effectively will create two tiers of journalists: the institutional press licensed by the government, and everyone else. That’s a pretty flimsy shield if what we are really trying to protect is the free flow of information.

Barrett Brown Prosecution Threatens Right to Link, Could Criminalize Routine Journalism Practices

Twitter was abuzz yesterday when an unknown person published what were alleged to be a group of passwords for the email accounts of Congressional staffers. Multiple journalists, including reporters from the Daily Beast and Buzzfeed, commented on the list while linking to it.

While one would assume linking to the list is a First Amendment-protected activity—given the journalists had nothing to do with stealing the passwords—Barrett Brown is currently under indictment, in part, for remarkably similar behavior. And if he is convicted, it could have dire consequences for press freedom.

Brown, who has written for Vanity Fair and the Guardian among other publications, started a website called “Project PM” in 2009, which crowdsourced public information about security contractors who worked with government agencies like the NSA. Part of what Brown and other Project PM users investigated were leaked emails from security contractors like HB Gary and Stratfor.

US press should fear being targeted: Assange

AFP

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assangesaid Wednesday that a US government effort to prosecute him should serve as a warning to journalists in the United States.

Assange, in an interview with the MSNBC television network, said there has been a "quite deliberate attempt to split off our organization from the First Amendment protections that are afforded to all publishers."

The WikiLeaks founder said he considers himself a journalist and "we all have to stick together to resist this sort of reinterpretation of the First Amendment," which guarantees the right to free speech.

"We have seen these statements, that The New York Times is, you know, also being looked at in terms of whether they have engaged in what they call 'conspiracy to commit espionage,'" he said.

"If they want to push the line that when a newspaperman talks to someone in the government about looking for things relating to potential abuses, that that is a conspiracy to commit espionage, then that's going to take out all the good government journalism that occurs in the United States," he said.

Assange added that if the "Washington authorities target us and destroy us" other journalists should be worried because "they're going to be next."

Carl Bernstein and Big Think Shill for the Globalist Agenda

Carl Bernstein and Big Think Shill for the Globalist Agenda
by Mark Daniels

In an article written by the Big Think Editors today, "Carl Bernstein:  The "Golden Age" of Investigative Journalism Never Existed", Carl Bernstein is quoted as an expert on Journalism.  The article begins by telling readers that Mr. Bernstein is "more concerned about todays' readers, because he thinks there is much less reading of serious journalism going on today".  Although he is more concerned about today's readers, he does attempt to place some blame on the journalists.

In his Big Think interview, Bernstein says the secret to becoming a great journalist is being a good listener—something that he says journalists today usually aren't. As television superseded newspapers as the major news medium in the '70s, '80s, and '90s, Bernstein says, "A lot of reporters ran in with microphones and stuck them in people’s faces with the object of sound bytes really for the purpose of manufacturing controversy. The real purpose of reporting, of journalism is to illuminate what is real, you know, real existential truth. What’s going on around us? That’s not sensationalism, that’s not manufactured controversy, that’s not—it’s about context and listening."
Bernstein also talks about the Watergate era and the legacy of his and Bob Woodward's investigation of the Nixon White House.
Asked if such an investigation could happen with today's media, Bernstein says that such a question is not really about the press. "Do I think that there are news organizations that if they had the same kind of information that Bob Woodward and I had in Watergate would go ahead and print the stories? Absolutely, I do," he says. "I think what is really a bigger question is, how would readers respond? How would the political system respond? The great thing about Watergate is, is that the system worked. The American system worked." Today, Bernstein is not so sure that the system would be as accountable. He also talks about what it was like to score such a major story so early in his career—and what it's been like trying to follow up that success.
Finally, Bernstein suggests that the United States needs to reinstate the draft.  This is where the Big Think Editors and Bernstein show us the real intentions of this propaganda.  They shill for the draft and mandatory national service.
"If there was a draft, I don’t think for a minute we would have had this horrible war in Iraq," says Bernstein. "I don’t think members of Congress would have voted to send their own children into that theater, or into Afghanistan, not a chance. That the end of the draft has permitted a cowardly politics, a huge consequence to who we are as a people I think there’s a need in this country for national service for all young people, for a year or two, whether it be in the military, whether it be building roads, whether it be in public health, whether it be in helping to teach children. But the idea that there is no unifying activity for young people such as could be provided for national service is a terrible shortcoming in our culture."
Did you notice that they failed to mention the fact the "elites", including members of Congress...remember the Bush family legacy....seem to always find a path to avoiding the draft.   These people will stop and nothing to promote their propaganda to the unsuspecting public. Watch the following Big Think video to hear Carl Bernstein in his own words.  Bernstein goes on to talk about the "old nation-state" with the ability to shut down the press, assassinate journalists, etc.  This is a clear attack on the Sovereignty of the United States  and other "nation-states' because he goes on the talk about the corruption in government; the need to change educational system, etc.

They are obviously trying to soften up the masses to accept major changes within our societies claiming, of course, that these changes will get rid of corruption.  Sometimes I don't know if I should laugh or cry.  It is time to Wake Up!  You too, can join the "Global Political Awakening"!!!!!!!!!!!!
