Global Blog Action Day to Focus on Water: OCT. 15

Here's an interesting event taking place tomorrow as bloggers across the world collectively focus on the topic of water.

Unfortunately, the focus is on supporting the United Nations' efforts to poison our water supply.  I joined the site in order to bring attention to the "real" problems we face regarding clean water.

Watch the video below and go to the Blog Action site for more.

Gender bender chemical atrazine widely contaminates U.S. public water supply

David Gutierrez
NaturalNews
September 7, 2010
Emerging research increasingly indicates that the U.S. water supply is widely contaminated with the endocrine disrupting chemical atrazine, but that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is taking almost no action on the threat.

Atrazine is an herbicide widely sprayed on corn fields in the Midwest, and one of the most widely detected groundwater contaminants in the country. Photo: Stephen & Claire Farnsworth.
Atrazine is an herbicide widely sprayed on corn fields in the Midwest, and one of the most widely detected groundwater contaminants in the country. According to an analysis of state and federal records by the Chicago Tribune, atrazine has been detected in the drinkingwater of a million people in 60 Illinois communities over the past four years. Yet the EPA requires testing for the chemical only four times a year, meaning that short-term spikes of the toxin go undetected — and unregulated.
Special agreements between the EPA and Syngenta, the top manufacturer of the atrazine used in the U.S., have led to limited weekly or biweekly testing for the chemical by 130 water utilities in 10 different states. In 2008, nearly half of these communities in the Midwest alone experienced atrazine levels in their water above the federally imposed limit of 3 ppb (parts per billion) at least once. In Flora, Illinois, levels spiked as high as 30 ppb at one point.
In nine Midwestern communities, atrazine levels averaged higher than 3 ppb for the full year. Yet unless levels higher than 3 ppb are detected during one of the EPA’s four official yearly tests, the agency is helpless to take action. Likewise, contamination detected at other times need not, under the Safe Water Drinking Act, be reported to the public. This has led to a situation where citizens are not only unaware that their water is contaminated, they are never told that an inexpensive home filter could remove the toxin from their water.
Even the EPA’s “safe” level of 3 ppb, however, may be far too high; studiessuggest that atrazine is biologically active in levels as low as 0.1 ppb, mimicking the action of hormones in the body. A recent meta-analysis of 125 studies by researchers from the University of South Florida found that the chemical causes developmental and reproductive defects in amphibians and fish. Another study, conducted by University of California-Berkeley researchers and published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, found that small amounts of atrazine lowered testosterone levels and fertility in male frogs. Many of the frogs were chemically castrated or even turned into females.
Prenatal exposure to low levels of atrazine has also been shown to predispose rats to cancer as adults. And according to a 2009 study by researchers from Indiana University, human children conceived between the months of April and July, when atrazine levels in water are highest, were more likely to suffer from nine different kinds of birth defects than children conceived in other months.
“Atrazine … appears to have effects during critical stages of fetal development,” said Suzanne Fenton of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, a former EPA researcher.
Atrazine has been banned in Europe for its contaminating effects on groundwater, and a handful of U.S. states prohibit spraying in certain contamination-prone areas. Yet the EPA’s most recent ruling on the chemical, issued in 2006, endorses its use. The Bush-era ruling was based on a 2003 review heavily funded by Syngenta. Bush administration officials are known to have met with officials from the company at least 50 times before issuing their ruling, including at two industry-dominated panels.
The EPA’s position has drawn the ire of states that have been stuck with regulating the atrazine problem on their own. In 2009, 44 water utilities in the states of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Mississippi and Ohio sued the federal government to reimburse them for the costs of atrazine cleanup.
Since the 2003 EPA review, a further 100 studies have been published showing health risks from atrazine exposure. The Obama administration is now conducting a review of the EPA’s stance on the chemical.

50 Reasons to Oppose Fluoridation

Dr. Paul Connett
Infowars.com
Abstract Water fluoridation is the practice of adding compounds containing fluoride to the water supply to produce a final concentration of fluoride of 1 part per million in an effort to prevent tooth decay. Trials first began in the US in 1945, but before any of these trials were complete, the practice was endorsed by the US Public.
Health Service in 1950. Since then fluoridation has been enthusiastically and universally promoted by US health officials as being a “safe and effective” for fighting tooth decay. However, even though most countries worldwide have not succumbed to America’s enthusiasm for this practice, their teeth are just as good, if not better, than those countries that have. The “50 Reasons” offered in this article for opposing fluoridation are based on a thorough review of the scientific literature as regards both the risks and benefits of being exposed to the fluoride ion. Documentation is offered which indicates that the benefits of ingested fluoride have been exaggerated, while the numerous risks have been downplayed or ignored.

Introduction
This document, titled “50 Reasons to Oppose Fluoridation,” has an interesting history. In October 2000, Dr. Hardy Limeback and I were invited by Ireland’s Ministry of Health and Children to present our concerns about water fluoridation to a panel called the “Fluoridation Forum.” We accepted. Ireland is the only country in Europe which has mandatory fluoridation and currently, over 70% of the Irish population is drinking fluoridated water.
When fluoridation opponents in Ireland heard that we had agreed to testify they were furious. They believed that this forum had been set up by the government merely to appear to deal with growing discontent about fluoridation. Opponents believed that most of the Forum panel members had been hand picked to “whitewash” fluoridation, and by testifying, Dr. Limeback and I would give an illusion of legitimacy to an illegitimately established process and any product it produced. We were in a dilemma. Although we also suspected that the opponents were correct in thinking the Forum was merely a rubber stamp for government policy, we both had a strong desire to bring the best science available to the panel. Had we chosen not to appear, proponents could have argued that there was no valid, scientific case to be made against fluoridation. In the face of fierce opposition we proceeded to testify. In my testimony, however, I explained that many citizens felt the forum was “fixed.” Then I offered the panel a challenge that could demonstrate to the Irish people and to us that the panel was truly going to perform an objective review of the issue. I presented the “50 Reasons to Oppose Fluoridation” and asked the panel to prepare a written, scientifically documented response and to make it publicly available.

Initially, the panel agreed and set up a sub-committee to do this. Forum minutes over the next year indicate several exchanges about how much progress was being made with the task. However, shortly before the Forum report was completed, it was announced that the panel didn’t have time to complete its answers. The cover excuse was that most of the 50 reasons were actually addressed in their 296 page report. This was blatantly untrue. Subsequently, a group of 11 scientists, including Dr. Limeback and myself, issued a detailed critique of the Forum’s report which can be accessed at http://www.fluoridealert.org/irish.forum-critique.htm It now has been three and a half years since the “50 Reasons to Oppose Fluoridation” was presented to the Fluoridation Forum, and even though the Irish Minister of Health and Children, Mr. Michael Martin, has been questioned about this document in the Irish parliament, there still has been no formal answer to the questions. Meanwhile, citizens in other fluoridated countries (e.g. Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United States) have asked their own local, state and federal health officials to respond to the “50 Reasons” document – also to no avail).
1) Fluoride is not an essential nutrient (NRC 1993 and IOM 1997). No disease has ever been linked to a fluoride deficiency. Humans can have perfectly good teeth without fluoride.
2) Fluoridation is not necessary. Most Western European countries are not fluoridated and have experienced the same decline in dental decay as the US (See data from World Health Organization in Appendix 1, and the time trends presented graphically at http://www.fluoridealert.org/who-dmft.htm ). The reasons given by countries for not fluoridating are presented in Appendix 2.)
3) Fluoridation’s role in the decline of tooth decay is in serious doubt. The largest survey ever conducted in the US (over 39,000 children from 84 communities) by the National Institute of Dental Research showed little difference in tooth decay among children in fluoridated and non-fluoridated communities (Hileman 1989). According to NIDR researchers, the study found an average difference of only 0.6 DMFS (Decayed Missing and Filled Surfaces) in the permanent teeth of children aged 5-17 residing in either fluoridated or unfluoridated areas (Brunelle and Carlos, 1990). This difference is less than one tooth surface! There are 128 tooth surfaces in a child’s mouth. This result was not shown to be statistically significant. In a review commissioned by the Ontario government, Dr. David Locker concluded:
“The magnitude of [fluoridation's] effect is not large in absolute terms, is often not statistically significant and may not be of clinical significance” (Locker 1999).
4) Where fluoridation has been discontinued in communities from Canada, the former East Germany, Cuba and Finland, dental decay has not increased but has actually decreased 2 (Maupome 2001; Kunzel and Fischer,1997,2000; Kunzel 2000 and Seppa 2000).
5) There have been numerous recent reports of dental crises in US cities (e.g. Boston, Cincinnati, New York City) which have been fluoridated for over 20 years. There appears to be a far greater (inverse) relationship between tooth decay and income level than with water fluoride levels.

Fluoride Is Toxic

Ryan Banister
Infowars.com
August 31, 2010
fluoride.png
It has been said that fluoride is a safe, healthy and necessary chemical for a human body. Many advocate that tooth decay could be prevented from increasing intake of fluoride in one’s diet. There is one article in the February 18th issue of the Rose Garden Resident which gave many positive reasons that fluoride should be put into the local water supply. This all seems fine unless the claims given in the article are found to be false. Some of them actually have been found to be false. The article mainly discusses a group called The Health Trust, and their mission to fluoridate San Jose’s water supply. The group’s chief argument is that San Jose, California is one of the largest metropolitan areas in the nation to not have a fluoridated water supply. There is a false dilemma here in saying that somehow because many other metropolitan cities have fluoridated water that this is reason enough to bring it to San Jose. Now, the main fallacy in this article to be refuted are the claims of Health Trust CEO, Frederick Ferrer, and his supporters saying fluoridating San Jose’s water will improve the health of the residents. Fluoride is a toxic compound that will not improve the health of anybody who consumes it.
This article, in a negative connotation, makes a brief mention of Fluoride Action Group, an opponent of fluoridating water and a corresponding local group, Citizens for Safe Drinking Water, who is headed by a woman named Maureen Jones. I had the chance to interview her on this issue. She happens to be the daughter of a former Mayor of San Jose, Clark Bradley, who also opposed the fluoridation of water. She adopted the idea from her dad that people need to be able to choose whether they want a chemical in their water that is made to affect the development of people. She continued saying, “Fluoride is the only people-treatment chemical added to public water. And that’s an ethical ‘no-no,’ no matter what. A third grader can think of ten reasons why that’s a bad idea.” Mr. Ferrer and his supporters apparently do not agree. In the article, he is quoted as saying, “We cannot drill our way out of this problem…The science is settled, the law is settled. For us it’s about the political will and the costs.” Maureen responded, “This is not a case of drilling your way out of it, it’s an education thing.”
The science of fluoride reveals quite an interesting history. There are four kinds of fluoride reported to exist in drinking water; they are calcium fluoride, sodium fluoride, sodium silico fluoride, and fluosilicic acid. Calcium fluoride comes from floor spar and is naturally occurring in water. The other three compounds come from a very different source, rock phosphate. Rock phosphate was used during the Cold War period for the extraction of uranium to make bombs. It is questionable as to why we would want to use this substance for consumption by humans. Maureen told me that all four compounds are toxic, but the fluosilicic acid, which is planned to be used in San Jose water, is much more toxic than the rest. She stated, “In small cities they often use the sodium fluoride, and more and more and more of the sodium fluoride is actually coming in from China and Mexico. It’s their toxic waste that some small cities are drinking."
In the 1930s an LD-50 study was conducted in France on fluoride. They tested rats with each of the four aforementioned compounds of fluoride. The results turned out to show calcium fluoride to be the least toxic, and the other four were at least 20 times more toxic. The article states, “Fluoride is naturally occurring at some level in all water.” The type of fluoride they are talking about is the much less toxic kind, calcium fluoride. This is a hasty generalization to say that it already exists in the water, when the article is mainly discussing the adding of fluosilicic acid to the water supply. It is important to note again that fluosolicic acid comes from a completely different source than calcium fluoride. Fluoride has been found in many more recent studies to be a neurotoxin; by attaching to aluminum, which already occurs in the water supply, it can pass through the blood-brain barrier and kill brain cells. It has also been found to cause many bone problems, such as joint fractures, by attracting to calcium and making the bones more brittle, as well as Osteosarcoma, a bone cancer. Fluoride also has been proven to cause Alzheimer’s disease. This is alarming information, especially when considering that many large cities across this country, approximately 70%, have fluoridated water.
Maureen Jones and many other people she knows have sent many studies and declassified documents to San Jose legislators, as well as Frederick Ferrer, which prove the toxicity of fluoride. They have simply ignored all of this convincing information. They have also been presented with an array of historical incidents where fluoride caused overwhelming health problems in other communities. Maureen sees no motivation for them to continue this pursuit for water fluoridation other than political or corporate gain. She would support The Health Trust if they were working towards the health of the community, but she simply does not believe that they are. She told me, “There’s all kinds of things The Health Trust could do if they had the political will to actually help poor kids.” There is overwhelming information that water fluoridation supporters are overlooking. When it comes down to education, San Jose legislation is not doing its part in looking at both sides of this issue. This is not just a friendly mistake, it is an immoral act of negligence. Maureen says it best, “It’s absolutely, in my opinion, flat-out criminal.”

Local News Coverage and Predicted Hit-Piece on Anti-Fluoride Campaign in Wichita

Travis W. Crank
Infowars.com
August 18, 2010
Have you ever wondered why it’s so difficult to convey all the important issues to your fellow humans, why so few seem to really listen, why so few even seem capable of getting upset over anything that truly matters to the human species? Why so many have lost the fire in their eyes and just cannot seem to grasp horrible crimes against their person, taking place right under their noses, hidden in plain sight? Why are we truly so apathetic to the reality around us?
Sodium fluoride and other poisons are being deliberately introduced into the public water supplies in order to dull the ‘teeth’ of the freedom movement in this nation (pun intended), make populations more docile overall and to promote sterility.
On August 5th, Infowars put out a call for action to launch a new campaign, to inform the public about the toxic chemical sodium fluoride that’s being added to tap water across the country. When Infowars first made the original poster available online, we immediately saw the opportunity to convey a uniform and provocative, yet blatantly truthful message to the public. Something a child could understand – There is Poison in the Tap Water. That is of course, if that child was not subjected to forced-medication from the day he or she was born…
These are the times we live in. This is the time for direct action. No longer can we operate exclusively on their time, on their terms, or in their forums – like so many great activists that have stood before their city council’s and other officials, being condescended and subject to the usual ridicule and other clichés, while the public servants pretend to hear our pleas, pretend to take an honest assessment and cease. Ultimately, to see them continuing this practice – due in part to financial kickbacks and other incentives given to them by the puppet federal government, so that they can have a convenient means of disposal of this toxic chemical – with the added bonus for them of promoting sterility and administering a low-dosage chemical lobotomy for everyone, over the course of years.
Just hours after the poster was made available and just prior to Alex Jones making this call for action on the air – we were getting busy. The purpose of this campaign is not raise hell for the sake of, but to incite public inquiry and to prod the general public into investigating forthemselves. Nor is it to pose as experts, ourselves. Common-sense is all that we require. This campaign has been aggressively promoted online by myself and others, and has now expanded to our friends across the pond and elsewhere overseas.
On August 13th, local media quickly picked up on the Infowars story concerning my open-letter to city officials and the anti-fluoride campaign in Wichita, and then contacted myself and associate James Gragg for interviews via telephone. KWCH was the first to inquire about the story. Contact with us was initially made by reporter Rebecca Gannon of KWCH News Channel 12, who conducted a telephone interview with me while I submitted information to her via e-mail. The story was later re-assigned to reporter Kim Wilhelm, who did the following hit-piece on our local movement, the first local story to appear which aired at 5 o’clock PM. KWCH failed to represent our key points with the exception of Mr. Gragg’s video testimony, as well as the supporting information I provided KWCH in the form of official documentation – as well as the City of Wichita’s own Water Poisoning Report which directly conflicts with the City’s verbal statements. Ms. Wilhelm largely regurgitates the city’s repeated statements:

Fluoride used as a singular term is deceptive by design. There are chemicals known as calcium fluoride and sodium fluoride –the former actually being a pervasive, naturally occurring substance and the latter delivering a devastating chemical attack to the human body in low-dosages over long period of time. Paul Fassa of Natural News has written an excellent piece on How to Detox Fluorides from Your Body.
sodium fluoride
One cannot argue with a ‘skull and crossbones’, yet those defending this practice continue to argue in favor of its use in water supplies across the nation, and in promoting commercial products loaded with it – most commonly in commercial toothpastes, but also in hundreds of other products we use every day without knowing because they’re not required to disclose its existence in many foods and beverages. The average person is either completely unaware of the danger, willfully ignorant in their chemical bliss (unknowing it’s source, I might add), or just so psychologically invested in this proven fraud that they cannot let go on their own without a shove. Or all of the above… Some people will believe almost anything that comes from a suit or otherwise ‘official’ sounding figure.
Efforts to stop the force-medication of our citizens has largely fallen on deaf ears insofar as public servants and city officials are concerned, because of a decades-long campaign by the establishment to deceive people into believing this additive is for the sake of healthy teeth, while playing on the ignorance of the general public. Nothing could be further from the truth. That is, except for just about anything else that comes from the mouthpieces in this tyrannical government.

As the story aired by KWCH on August 13th was concluding, I was contacted by Craig Andresof KSN News Channel 3 and we conducted a brief interview via telephone with him – also forwarding our entire dialog with KWCH news reporters which included the above documentation, background information on sodium fluoride, the distinct differences between calcium and sodium fluoride, etc and finally the deceptive use of the singular term ‘fluoride’, coupled with their written admission of, “Water additive which promotes strong teeth.” I urged him to pay close attention to the discrepancy between the City’s verbal statements, and the Water Poisoning Report made available to the public.
KSN aired their initial segment on the story later that evening, at 10 o’clock PM:

KSN aired their initial segment on the story later that evening, at 10 o’clock PM:
City of Wichita Public Works/Water Director Chris Carrier states, “I think we’re real proud of the quality of water that we have, that water is tested several times a day.” He goes on to state that, “We don’t put any fluoride in the water at all in Wichita, we never have and we never will.”
Well, Mr. Carrier – we plan to hold you to that statement, as well as your successor… The City of Wichita’s Water and Sewer Department website states that, “On March 11th, 2010, Christopher M. Carrier was appointed by City Manager Robert Layton to act as Interim Director of Water Utilities.”
In true investigative fashion, reporter Craig Andres draws attention to the City’s own Water Poisoning Report that directly conflicts with Mr. Carrier’s own statements to the contrary, on behalf of the city. Craig Andres also emphasizes that this a national campaign to rid the nation’s water supply of sodium fluoride and uses this term accurately, as opposed to the misleading term of ‘fluoride’ by itself – which does not exist. In conclusion, KSN also re-iterates our assertion; that the majority of cities surrounding Wichita are admittingly force-medicating their citizens and that we urge the public to investigate and inform themselves as to the danger.
Do we have a closet-truther in Mr. Craig Andres?
Cities in the state of Kansas which are confirmed to be adding sodium fluoride are listed in the following 17 page document:

This is low-effort/high-impact activism. Thanks to the Infowars crew for providing the original design; I have produced a double-sided version of this poster which is designed to be to be taken down and read by an unsuspecting sheeple – to take them further down the rabbit hole.
The black and white version of this poster works very well laser-printed on either yellow cardstock, or yellow paper. Using cardstock, you can avoid having to ‘wrap’ your posters around telephone poles by simply tacking two staples at the top and bottom. And remember – don’t make them difficult to take down – they’re designed to be!
Then wash, rinse and repeat as desired. Litter your cities with the truth. Put yourself on the right side of history and feel good about fighting evil.
The reverse side bears a stern warning as to the true purpose of sodium fluoride, including color images and our own city’s Water Poisoning Reports. The Microsoft Publisher documentfor the reverse side is available here so that other activists may easily edit it to fit their needs, replacing the water report images with those of your own region, for example – particularly if they illustrate the same deception we observe, here in central Kansas:

Activists Take On Fluoridated Water in Wichita

Activists Take On Fluoridated Water in Wichita

Concerned citizens in Wichita, Kansas, have informed that city’s public officials about a poster campaign designed to inform the public about the health hazards of water fluorination.
“We know the truth. And we are growing our numbers,” writes Travis W. Crank. “You will be forced to answer the increasing number of inquiries to your offices which will result — and shall escalate until the day that it is stopped and independent testing results show that your fluoridation operation has been withdrawn from this area altogether,” he writes in an open letter addressed to Sedgwick County public servants and members of the Wichita City Council.
This sort of direct action stands as an example that should be taken up by activists around the country in the struggle to rid our drinking water of the deadly neurotoxin. Crank’s open letter, an email thread, and details about the poster campaign follow:
Fluoridation of the Public Water Supply – Open Letter to County ‘Officials’
Transcript of E-mail Thread:
To Sedgwick County Public Servants / Wichita City Council Members:
Ladies & gentlemen – You will begin to notice a number of signs being placed throughout the city in order to inform the public of what is being deliberately pumped into the municipal water supplies. The fact that sodium fluoride (and other chemicals) is a very dangerous substance is well established. It has no business in our drinking water. Both the City of Wichita and Derby both concede that flouride is an additive, meant to prevent tooth decay and nothing could be further from the truth. This long-time deception will end – regardless of any federal incentives that have made this operation so appealing to the elected ‘officials’.
Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin were among the first leaders to use low-dosage water fluoridation as a means to subdue the general public, make concentration camp inmates more docile & to reduce fertility. In the modern age, water fluoridation is merely one method that is being used to take the ‘teeth’ out of the freedom movement in this nation.
We know the truth. And we are growing our numbers.
Signs will continue to be placed on a continual basis by an increasing number of activists in the area, in order to inform the public of the truth and to rally public inquiry. This operation will continue for some time and for as long as necessary, well in advance of any official proceedings that we will petition for – when we feel the time is right. By that time, you will have been inundated with telephone calls from an angry citizenry that demand to know why this is happening – and has been happening for over a decade.
More than just a blatant warning on the front side of these posters; upon being torn down, the citizen is then presented with definitive proof on the back side of these publications. Photographs of fluoride chemical bags & other technical data – including the City’s own ‘Water Poisoning Report’.
You will be forced to answer the increasing number of inquiries to your offices which will result – and shall escalate until the day that it is stopped and independent testing results show that your flouridation operation has been withdrawn from this area altogether.
That is all for now. I would recommend that the public servants of the great City of Wichita stop fluoridation on their own accord, and well in advance of future legal proceedings. Times have changed. And we are now pushing back. The great people of this state and city will do the bulk of the work for us as we lead them further down the rabbit hole.
Have a great day.

Subject: Money Saving Idea
To the members of the Sedgwick county commissioners,
Please see below, a quick survey (short list) of several clinical studies concerning the use of fluorides in drinking water. In a time when money is so tight, it would be a prudent measure to discontinue to fluorinate our tap water. The various medical problems, caused by this public medication program, causes an additional burden on our medical services – which continues to add to the cost for all of us for these services. I should enlighten you, that 98% of European countries “outlaw” fluorination of public tap water. There is a reason. I am not speaking about “calcium” fluoride, which is a “naturally occurring” mineral, but to the industrial waste product, known as “sodium” fluoride (from the pesticide & aluminum industries), which is being added to our public water supply. This “source,” contains lead, mercury, barium and many other toxic industrial waste by-products. And if the county derives its additives “source” from China, that’s an entirely different, and MORE hazardous source.
I don’t know how much actual money the county could save (a portion to be sure) in directly discontinuing to fluoridate the public water supplies, but the citizens of this county would be healthier for it (for sure), and that will help to reduce some of the demand on county’s medical services, which should be seen as an indirect savings to the community at large.
Thank you for your time and consideration. Documentation of Clinical Studies & Other Data Follows

In 2006 Article White House Science Czar Still Talks Population Reduction and a “Substantial Carbon Tax”

In 2006 Article White House Science Czar Still Talks Population Reduction and a “Substantial Carbon Tax”

Jurriaan Maessen
Infowars.comAugust 2, 2010
As recently as 2006, White House science czar repeated his call for curbing human population for the sake of the environment and “substantial carbon taxes”.
In the article titled “The Energy Innovation imperative: Addressing Oil Dependence, Climate Change, and Other 21st Century Energy Challenges“, Holdren admits (among other things) that notions such as “notably improving health care, reproductive rights, and educational opportunities for women” are, although “attractive in their own right”, only measures by which reduced population growth can be achieved. In regards to population-issues Holden writes (page 15):
“Lower is better for many reasons. If world population were 8 billion in 2100 rather than the midrange UN forecast of about 10 billion, holding down the carbon emissions from the energy to make everybody prosperous would be that much easier. Fortunately, reduced population growth can be achieved by measures that are attractive in their own right (notably improving health care, reproductive rights, and educational opportunities for women).”
Holdren not only makes clear he isn’t satisfied by the UN-target of 10 billion by the year 2100 (he would prefer cutting that number by 2 billion), he readily admits that improving health, reproductive rights and educational opportunities for women are means to that end.
In the same year Holdren published his essay, professor of medical demography of the London school of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, John Cleland, admitted to- and rejected- the fact that the scientific and political communities use coded language when speaking of population control. Speaking in front of representatives of the UN Population fund, the International Planned Parenthood Foundation, European Commission, World Bank and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Cleland stated (page 33):
“No more shrouding our statements in code. Because code just confuses people.(…) It does this cause no service at all to continue to shroud family planning in the obfuscating phrase “sexual and reproductive health”. People don’t really know what it means. If we mean family planning or contraception, we must say it. If we are worried about population growth, we must say it. We must use proper, straightforward language. I am fed up with the political correctness that daren’t say the name population stabilization, hardly dares to mention family planning or contraception out of fear that somebody is going to get offended. It is pathetic!”
In the mid-seventies, the current White House science czar had no problem using straightforward language, no problem at all, when he argued for a wide range of measures to cut population size to an “acceptable” level. In the much-debated textbookEcoscience, Holdren was not hindered by political correctness when he proposed a number of gruesome measures to lower worldwide fertility-levels:
“Adding a sterilant to drinking water or staple foods is a suggestion that seems to horrify people more than most proposals for involuntary fertility control. Indeed, this would pose some very difficult political, legal, and social questions, to say nothing of the technical problems. No such sterilant exists today, nor does one appear to be under development. To be acceptable, such a substance would have to meet some rather stiff requirements: it must be uniformly effective, despite widely varying doses received by individuals, and despite varying degrees of fertility and sensitivity among individuals; it must be free of dangerous or unpleasant side effects; and it must have no effect on members of the opposite sex, children, old people, pets, or livestock.”
In the 2006 article mentioned before, John Holdren also touched upon the possibility of a carbon-tax:
“Perhaps most importantly in the context of the character of energy challenges as elaborated in this article, companies are likely to continue to under-invest in developing and deploying low- and no-carbon energy options until there is a stronger marketplace incentive for such action, either in the form of a substantial carbon tax or its practical equivalent in the form of economy-wide emissions caps implemented through tradable permits.”
It’s becoming clear that the aim of reducing the world’s population was still firmly on John P. Holdren’s mind in 2006, just as it was in 1977 when he co-authored Ecoscience. What has changed is the language he chooses to use.
