Congress Moves to Grant Even More Power to the NSA

By Carey Wedler

Privacy advocates are urging the House of Representatives and Senate to vote against bills that further increase the government’s widespread surveillance of citizens. The bills, called the “Protecting Cyber Networks Act” (H.R. 1560) and the “Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act” (S. 754) are the latest move by lawmakers to bolster the strength of the domestic spying apparatus.

One of the main objectives of the new laws is to eliminate consequences for companies that share their users’ private information with the government. The bills refer to this as “liability protection.”

Letters written to members of the House and Senate from a coalition of privacy advocates caution lawmakers that the bills

…would significantly increase the National Security Agency’s (NSA) access to personal information, and authorize the federal government to use that information for a myriad of purposes unrelated to cyber security.

How Government Agents (Besides Cops) Are Killing Family Pets

Carey Wedler

In recent years, police officers have developed an unfavorable reputation for shooting and killing dogs. Sometimes they do it while raiding the wrong home; sometimes they do it just for fun. While this epidemic of dog-killing cops has garnered a great deal of attention, the government is killings canines in another, equally sinister manner.

Animal control agencies are often tasked with euthanizing dogs that are vicious or who, because of limited resources, cannot fit in shelters. Few people question these deaths. However, a new reportfrom CNN reveals that animal control has been killing pets for far less legitimate reasons: because their owners cannot afford to pay fines on minor violations.

Former CIA Agent Is Being Charged with Terrorism and Murder Over Drone Strike

Carey Wedler

Two former CIA employees will be charged with murder, terrorism, conspiracy, and waging war in Pakistan regarding the agency’s highly-criticized drone program in the Middle East. This week, Judge Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui of the Islamabad high court in Pakistan ordered former CIA station chief, Jonathan Banks, and former CIA general counsel, John Rizzo (who gave the legal approval for the strikes), to be charged.

Though the United States has performed over 400 drone strikes in Pakistan since 2004, the charges stem specifically from a 2009 incident that killed the son and brother of Kareem Khan, a tribesman in North Waziristan. The United States and Pakistani governments claimed those killed were militants but offered no proof. Khan denies those allegations.

New Report Urging to Give FBI More Power Shows Exactly Why it’s a Bad Idea

Carey Wedler

new report on the FBI has decided not only that the bureau is doing an exemplary job, but that it needs more power. The Congressionally mandated “Protecting the Homeland in the 21st Century” report was conducted by the FBI 9/11 Review Commission, an external body appointed by Congress to analyze the FBI’s progress since 9/11.

The 128-page report is mostly complimentary, praising the agency for improvements since its initiation of reforms since 9/11 (and since a scathing report on its progress in 2004).  Among many strengths, the FBI was found to have excelled at  “building collaborative relationships with its key partners across the US Government,” including the Department of Homeland Security, Department of Justice, and the NSA. It praised the bureau for its intelligence sharing capabilities and for combating threats of cyber-terrorism. The bureau also celebrated Congress and its support of the Patriot Act because “many of our counter-terrorism successes are the direct result of the provisions of the Act.”

California Cops Who Blew Whistle on Ticket Quotas Forced to Undergo Counseling

Carey Wedler

Six police officers from Whittier, California are suing the city after being punished for protesting ticket quotas. The officers say they complained repeatedly within the department and shortly after were met with discrimination. They say their “careers have been materially and adversely affected, and irreparably harmed” by the city.

Jim Azpilicueta, Anthony Gonzalez, Mike Rosario, Nancy Ogle, Steve Johnson and Cpl. Joseph Rivera say that the quotas were imposed in 2008. They spoke out multiple times but when they took it to their supervisors and the Internal Affairs Division, they were swiftly punished. The officers allege they were reprimanded by being ordered to undergo counseling and that they encountered increased scrutiny, “disparaging” remarks, and faced unwarranted transfers.

DoD Releases ''Evidence'' of Snowden’s Damages to National Security … and it’s COMPLETELY Redacted

Carey Wedler

Per a Freedom of Information Act Request lawsuit filed byVice News, the Department of Defense has released a report on the damaging effects of Edward Snowden’s 2013 NSA leaks.

The only problem? It’s redacted. Entirely. Not a crumb of evidence was present in the “evidence” the government released.
