Saudi Arabia, in an unprecedented act of unprovoked unilateral military aggression against Yemen by the autocratic absolute monarchy, was allegedly triggered in a US-backed attempt to restore what Riyadh is calling the "legitimate government of Yemen."

What exactly constitutes a legitimate government is not clear for a despotic regime where elections are not held, women cannot drive, and enemies of the state are beheaded in medieval displays of public barbarism not entirely unlike their ideological ambassadors among the so-called "Islamic State" or ISIS.

CODEPINK Repeatedly Disrupts Brennan Hearing Calling Out Names of Civilians Killed in Drone Strikes

Thursday’s confirmation hearing for CIA nominee John Brennan was briefly postponed to clear the room of activists from CODEPINK after they repeatedly disrupted Brennan’s testimony. One woman held a list of Pakistani children killed in U.S. drone strikes. Former U.S. diplomat Col. Ann Wright interrupted Brennan while wearing a sign around her neck with the name of Tariq Aziz, a 16-year-old Pakistani boy who was killed in a U.S. drone strike in 2011. Wright and seven others were arrested. We speak to CODEPINK founder Medea Benjamin, who also disrupted the meeting and recently visited Pakistan to speak with victims of drone strikes. "It’s not only the killing, it’s the terrorizing of entire populations, where they hear the drones buzzing overhead 24 hours a day, where they’re afraid to go to school, afraid to go to the markets, to funerals, to weddings, where it disrupts entire communities," Benjamin says. "And we are trying to get this information to our elected officials, to say, 'You are making us unsafe here at home,' to say nothing of how illegal, immoral and inhumane these policies are."

CIA Expands Drone Strikes to Yemen

The CIA is ready to expand its drone strikes from Pakistan to Yemen. A U.S. official said that a secret plan to bomb Yemen has been in the works for months, Fox News reports today.

Corporate media propaganda on the CIA’s effort to destablize Yemen.

 
Obama approved the secret plan without consulting Congress last year. It has been under development for several months and is set to be rolled out in July.

EW YORK (AFP) - The United States has stepped up its attacks on militant suspects in Yemen with armed drones and fighter jets, The New York Times reported.

The accelerated attacks have been taking place over the past few weeks, and come as the government in Sanaa has been struggling to remain in control.

The attacks are designed to take advantage of the growing power vacuum in the country and to keep militants in the south who are linked to Al-Qaeda from assuming power, the newspaper reported.

CAIRO (AFP) - The turmoil in Yemen which has seen its veteran president seek treatment in Saudi Arabia after a bomb attack makes the local Al-Qaeda franchise "more dangerous", the top US uniformed commander Admiral Michael Mullen said on Wednesday.

Al-Qaeda in Yemen "has grown into a very virulent deadly federated point in the Al-Qaeda organisation," the chairman of the US joint chiefs of staff told a news conference on a visit to Cairo.

"It is incredibly dangerous and made more dangerous in the ongoing chaos."

Yemeni President Ali Abullah Saleh, who was flown to Saudi Arabia for treatment on Saturday after an attack on his palace following five months of protests against his 33-year rule, has been a key ally in the US "war on terror".

SANAA (AFP) - Security forces in the Yemeni capital battled heavily armed supporters of the country's most powerful tribal leader on Thursday as President Ali Abdullah Saleh ordered the tribesman's arrest.

The leader, Sheikh Sadiq al-Ahmar, in turn accused Saleh of dragging the country into civil war, speaking after hours of clashes late Wednesday and overnight in which at least 24 people were killed.

Meanwhile a website linked to the defence ministry said 28 more people died when an explosion ripped through an ammunition plant belonging to the al-Ahmar tribal opposition. 

This could not be immediately confirmed independently.

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The US government is dropping its support for Yemen's embattled president and is helping negotiate his departure, the New York Times reported, citing US and Yemeni officials.

Washington has long supported President Ali Abdullah Saleh, who has been in power since 1978, and the administration of President Barack Obama has largely refrained from criticizing him in public.

But US officials have told allies that they see Saleh's position as untenable due to the widespread protests, and believe he should leave office.
