War is the new normal

“On an average day, eighteen veterans of our nation’s armed forces take their own lives..."

Remember the war, the one in Afghanistan? The recent Memorial Day weekend forced the news media to briefly focus on it. But otherwise the war and its heavy toll have faded from our national consciousness, leaving President Barack Obama free to continue the combat without much pressure to get out.

Just how forgotten the war has become is revealed in the latest news coverage report of the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism. The project gives its findings in a nonjudgmental, just-the-facts manner, no how maddening they are. The Afghanistan War didn’t make the top five stories covered in newspapers, online or on cable and network television for the period May 16-May 22.

I wish Pew would go a step farther in these monthly reports. I’d like a few paragraphs on the harm being done to the United States by the longest war in our history, both to the country as a whole and to the women and men fighting it.

US Troops discuss "Drop-Weapons"

Editor's Note:  Is US law enforcement also using drop weapons here at home to cover up disastrous home invasions such as the murder of Jose Guerena in his home in Pima County, Arizona?

Don't Tread on Me

We are told every Memorial Day to remember those that gave their lives for your freedom. This is so pervasive in our society that it is hardly ever questioned. We are sold on flags, apple pie and yellow ribbons. We cheer and even get a little misty eyed thinking about those brave soldiers that gave their all for us. After all nothing could be more honorable than sacrificing yourself for others. This Memorial Day I want you to get past the pomp and circumstance of holiday and really think about the reality of our world.

“The most potent weapon of the oppressor, is the mind of the oppressed.”- Steven Biko

The first thing I would like you to consider, are you free? Of course we are free, we are Americans after all. Land of the free and home of the brave. We can do what ever we want and we chat we’re #1, we’re #1! That may be true years ago, but it is not now. While we are waving the Chinese made American flags, our freedoms have long since been taken away. The fact of the matter is that we are all slaves. No longer does there need to be plantation owner with a whip, all we need is a banker with a pen. The best part of this new slave system is that it is a chain the slave willingly puts on and mentally justifies to themselves. The very fact that we are free to put on the chain makes us think that we are free to take it off.

Veteran Suicides Outnumber US Military Deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan: REPORT

More than 1,000 veterans in California under 35 died after returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan between 2005 and 2008 - three times as many California service members who were killed in conflict overseas, according to a recently published Bay Citizenreport.

Investigative journalist Aaron Glantz studied the cases of Reuben Paul Santos, Alex Lowenstein and Elijah Warren to shed light on a growing trend among Afghanistan and Iraq veterans who have died through high-risk behavior and suicide after being discharged. In particular, veterans who returned home to California died through motorcycle and motor vehicle accidents and unintentional poisoning; in addition, veterans were two and a half times as likely to commit suicide as Californians of the same age who had not served in the military.

Glantz, who has reported on the Iraq and Afghanistan wars since 2005, decided to focus on veterans in California because "it's important to look at our own community. [Santos] was this young man that was from a community that was literally right down the street. That's how silent this epidemic is."
