An EMP Missing By TWO WEEKS Is NOT a Near Miss

As some of you will know I report on the space weather regularly when there is something going on…or somethingmight be going on in the hours following the article.

I was shocked yesterday to see reports of a ‘Carrington-class event’ that occurred two weeks ago. I trawled the NASA and NOAA sites looking for what I had missed. I had missed nothing, there was no such event. A report on spaceweather.com this morning says:

Carrington-Class Event: “The World Escaped an EMP Catastrophe”

According to researchers at EMPact America, an organization dedicated to studying and preparing for the possibility of large-scale electro magnetic pulse threats that can destroy our modern day electrical infrastructure, the earth came dangerously close to a serious destabilization event. A couple of weeks ago the sun emitted a massive CME (Coronal Mass Ejection) that, had it been earth-directed, would likely have wiped out critical portions of the world’s power grid and sent developed nations back to the stone age within a matter of seconds.

‘The world escaped an EMP catastrophe,’ Henry Cooper, who now heads High Frontier, a group pushing for missile defence, told Washington Secrets.
‘There had been a near miss about two weeks ago, a Carrington-class coronal mass ejection crossed the orbit of the Earth and basically just missed us,’ added Peter Vincent Pry, who served on the Congressional EMP Threat Commission.
‘Basically this is a Russian roulette thing,’ he said. ‘We narrowly escape from a Carrington-class disaster.’ Washington Examiner
It was a “Carrington-Class” event, named after the 1859 incident that left telegraphs around the world inoperable and reportedly even lit some of the equipment on fire because of the electric surge.

U.S And United Kingdom To Cut Power In Preparation of Massive Solar Storm

In a stunning announcement, The United States and United Kingdom are likely set to begin “controlled” power cuts in preparation of a giant solar storm.

The announcement by Thomas Bogdan, the director of the US Space Weather Prediction Centre, comes a week after a large-scale solar flare released a massive amount of radiation and threatened to cause moderate disruption.

The solar flare on June 7th, 2011 was luckily pointed away from Earth but caused many to wonder if another solar flare is imminent, this one aimed directly at earth.

Is Your Time Machine Ready? – Episode 031 | Off The Grid News

logoIt’s not a matter of “if”… it’s a matter of “when”. Either because of economic factors or a solar storm, the power grid is coming down.
Where will you be when that happens?
If you're like most Americans, you're numb. The dire warnings that are being screeched at you on a day in and day out basis are becoming nothing more than white noise. It's an unfortunate tendency of humans that if the threat doesn't materialize, then the threat doesn't exist.

For example, Y2K - it was a bunch of smoke and mirrors, right? (Not really - as one of our writers said in an October article, "the catastrophe was avoided because IT companies all over the world invested billions of dollars and spent thousands of man-hours retooling every line of application source code that mattered.") It didn't happen because the problem was addressed.

It's criminal that our government can't use this same logic to address the potential geomagnetic storm/power grid threat that sits at our back door even as we speak. Despite hours upon hours of testimony before Congress last year, today's guest on Off the Grid Radio couldn't induce that Congress to pass a bill that would require the power companies to begin the process of hardening the grid to a potential EMP event.

Hundreds of millions of people face imminent death when our society reverts back to 18th century America within the 90 seconds it would take a geomagnetic storm to bring down the 300+ high voltage transformers that feed our power grid.

Let me re-emphasize that... hundreds of millions of people will die. And our Congress, the very one that was able to ram through a 2700+ page monstrosity of a health care bill within hours, can't even pass a two-page resolution to mandate a hardening of our power grid.

Join Off the Grid Radio and our guest, John Kappenman, as he highlights the threat that the current solar activity poses and gives us an update on where we stand as a nation in regard to this threat.

It will only take 90 seconds for our lives to be changed forever.

Are you ready?

Global Eruption Rocks the Sun

NASA Science News

On August 1, 2010, an entire hemisphere of the sun erupted. Filaments of magnetism snapped and exploded, shock waves raced across the stellar surface, billion-ton clouds of hot gas billowed into space. Astronomers knew they had witnessed something big.

It was so big, it may have shattered old ideas about solar activity.

"The August 1st event really opened our eyes," says Karel Schrijver of Lockheed Martin’s Solar and Astrophysics Lab in Palo Alto, CA. "We see that solar storms can be global events, playing out on scales we scarcely imagined before."

For the past three months, Schrijver has been working with fellow Lockheed-Martin solar physicist Alan Title to understand what happened during the "Great Eruption." They had plenty of data: The event was recorded in unprecedented detail by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory and twin STEREO spacecraft. With several colleagues present to offer commentary, they outlined their findings at a press conference today at the American Geophysical Union meeting in San Francisco.

Explosions on the sun are not localized or isolated events, they announced. Instead, solar activity is interconnected by magnetism over breathtaking distances. Solar flares, tsunamis, coronal mass ejections--they can go off all at once, hundreds of thousands of miles apart, in a dizzyingly-complex concert of mayhem.

"To predict eruptions we can no longer focus on the magnetic fields of isolated active regions," says Title, "we have to know the surface magnetic field of practically the entire sun."

This revelation increases the work load for space weather forecasters, but it also increases the potential accuracy of their forecasts.

"The whole-sun approach could lead to breakthroughs in predicting solar activity," commented Rodney Viereck of NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center in Boulder, CO. "This in turn would provide improved forecasts to our customers such as electric power grid operators and commercial airlines, who could take action to protect their systems and ensure the safety of passengers and crew."

In a paper they prepared for the Journal of Geophysical Research (JGR), Schrijver and Title broke down the Great Eruption into more than a dozen significant shock waves, flares, filament eruptions, and CMEs spanning 180 degrees of solar longitude and 28 hours of time. At first it seemed to be a cacophony of disorder until they plotted the events on a map of the sun's magnetic field.

Title describes the Eureka! moment: "We saw that all the events of substantial coronal activity were connected by a wide-ranging system of separatrices, separators, and quasi-separatrix layers." A "separatrix" is a magnetic fault zone where small changes in surrounding plasma currents can set off big electromagnetic storms.

Airline frequent fliers 'radiation poisoning risks' from space 'solar flare' storm activity

Airline frequent fliers are at greater risk of developing long term radiation poisoning from “solar space storms” or flare activity from the Sun, a new study warns. (If the airport naked body scanners don't do it first -- Ed.)

Andrew Hough -- The Telegraph

Researchers found passengers faced the “hazard” of space radiation, which created unhealthy levels of exposure while flying at “typical cruise altitudes” of 40,000 feet.

Experts warned passengers could be subjected to increasing risk to cancer due to such radiation levels.

Nasa scientists believe the earth is facing danger from a once-in-a-century “solar flare”, a disturbance on the Sun's surface that could cause geomagnetic storms on this planet.

One in the mid-19th century blocked the nascent telegraph system and many scientists believe another is overdue.
