Ice age Britons ate each other and made cups from skulls

A gruesome discovery in the Cheddar Gorge suggests that ancient Britons indulged in cannibalism and even drank from the skulls of their victims.

Scientists have discovered the remains of three humans – including a child-of-three – that appear to have been killed for food, their bodies butchered and then eaten.

The bones showed precision cuts to extract the maximum amount of meat and the skulls had been carved into cups and bowls for drinking and eating.

The fragments – which are 14,700 years old- are thought to be the oldest examples in the world of skull cups and the first evidence of ritual killing in Britain.

What is particularly horrific is that at the time, humans knew how to bury their dead and so were not savages meaning the remains are most likely the result of premeditated cannibalism.

In Africa, drought continues for the sixth consecutive year, adding terribly to the toll of famine victims. During 1972 record rains in parts of the U.S., Pakistan and Japan caused some of the worst flooding in centuries. In Canada's wheat belt, a particularly chilly and rainy spring has delayed planting and may well bring a disappointingly small harvest. Rainy Britain, on the other hand, has suffered from uncharacteristic dry spells the past few springs. A series of unusually cold winters has gripped the American Far West, while New England and northern Europe have recently experienced the mildest winters within anyone's recollection.

As they review the bizarre and unpredictable weather pattern of the past several years, a growing number of scientists are beginning to suspect that many seemingly contradictory meteorological fluctuations are actually part of a global climatic upheaval. However widely the weather varies from place to place and time to time, when meteorologists take an average of temperatures around the globe they find that the atmosphere has been growing gradually cooler for the past three decades. The trend shows no indication of reversing. Climatological Cassandras are becoming increasingly apprehensive, for the weather aberrations they are studying may be the harbinger of another ice age.


Telltale signs are everywhere —from the unexpected persistence and thickness of pack ice in the waters around Iceland to the southward migration of a warmth-loving creature like the armadillo from the Midwest.Since the 1940s the mean global temperature has dropped about 2.7° F. Although that figure is at best an estimate, it is supported by other convincing data. When Climatologist George J. Kukla of Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory and his wife Helena analyzed satellite weather data for the Northern Hemisphere, they found that the area of the ice and snow cover had suddenly increased by 12% in 1971 and the increase has persisted ever since. Areas of Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic, for example, were once totally free of any snow in summer; now they are covered year round.

Scientists have found other indications of global cooling. For one thing there has been a noticeable expansion of the great belt of dry, high-altitude polar winds —the so-called circumpolar vortex—that sweep from west to east around the top and bottom of the world. Indeed it is the widening of this cap of cold air that is the immediate cause of Africa's drought. By blocking moisture-bearing equatorial winds and preventing them from bringing rainfall to the parched sub-Sahara region, as well as other drought-ridden areas stretching all the way from Central America to the Middle East and India, the polar winds have in effect caused the Sahara and other deserts to reach farther to the south. Paradoxically, the same vortex has created quite different weather quirks in the U.S. and other temperate zones. As the winds swirl around the globe, their southerly portions undulate like the bottom of a skirt. Cold air is pulled down across the Western U.S. and warm air is swept up to the Northeast. The collision of air masses of widely differing temperatures and humidity can create violent storms—the Midwest's recent rash of disastrous tornadoes, for example.

Monster Snow Storms Could Cover Half of U.S. by Christmas

While the details of what areas will get smacked by a major snowstorm this weekend are still being sorted out, one thing is certain, the storm has the potential bring a travel nightmare to many areas.

AccuWeather.com meteorologists are predicting a storm will move from the northern Plains into the Ohio Valley, then redevelop off the mid-Atlantic coast. On that path, the storm will produce a swath of plowable snow from the Dakotas through the Midwest and Great Lakes and into the Northeast.

The storm has the potential to explode into a major snowstorm that could produce in excess of 6 inches of snow over a large area of the Northeast states and eastern Canada.

All data points to the sun as the primary source of short-term and long term climate change on Earth. While volcanic eruptions such as the current one in Iceland can affect short-term weather conditions over a region, planetary climate is governed by solar activity-or lack of it.

The first inkling that something had changed with the sun was the recognition of an abnormal sunspot cycle. Then, astronomers noted that all the planets were heating up-even little Pluto on the outskirts of our solar system.

While climatologists on Earth massaged the data to make it seem like man-made global warming was real, major climate changes were occurring on Mars.

Author claims we're in the grip of a mini ice age

AFTER nearly two weeks of snow and sub zero temperatures rivaling those of Siberia, the old joke about global warming being a good thing has had a new lease of life. So what has happened to doom-laden predictions of the world heating up as glaciers melt?

FIRST the good news. These bitter winters aren’t going to last forever. The bad news is that they will go on for the next 30 years as we have entered a mini ice age.

So says author Gavin Cooke in his book Frozen Britain. He began writing it in 2008 and it was published last year when experts were scratching their heads at the cause of the bitter winter of 2009/10 which brought England to a standstill. Some said it was a one-off event, with experts predicting snowfall becoming increasingly rare.

Now, 12 months on, the current sub zero spell makes last year look just a bit chilly. Just like kids enjoying ‘snow days’ off school, Gavin ought to be delighted with the cold snap. After all, he can justifiably say ‘I told you so’. But he’s as glum as the rest of us.

2012, Planet X, and Extreme Weather: Theories Compete to Explain Significant Events

One fact is certain: the weather is getting more extreme by the minute.  Speculations range from the natural to the man-made; scientific to conspiratorial.  One article that we posted spoke of a galactic alignment set for December 21, 2012 marking the end of an age -- and perhaps our planet.  The author of that post discussed the supporting evidence found by science writer Lawrence Joseph.  Joseph's investigation spawned two excellent books for those open minded to the idea that our entire solar system is heading through a massive energy cloud in the coming few years;  in Apocalypse 2012, Josephs cited the end of 2009 as a ramping-up period of increasingly strange weather and natural disasters.  And so here we are: more and more it looks like if the worlddoes end -- it will be in ice, not in fire. 

The article posted below is one of the more measured and rational we have come across on the subject of the Planet X (Nibiru) theory of weather influence.  As the article intimates, one is likely either to find extreme denial on the NASA side, or an End Times-ready willingness to accept the arrival of Nibiru without question on the other side.  Is Nibiru causing (or contributing to) the global havoc we see around us?  We are keeping an open mind and welcome your comments.

As 2012 comes near, Planet X theory thrives

Some time ago NASA made an announcement. They discovered another planet called Planet X. Now just in this statement there are already thousands of people debating just that, even a NASA scientist in 2008 tried to debunk the Nibiru or Planet X "myths".


Well if you know what this is all about you might as well skip the rest of this article. If you have never heard of the supposed planet-sized object heading this way then read on.

Like many other “conspiracy theories” it should contain some truth because conspiracy theories are just that, most of them are truth of something that happened without those that believe it being able to entirely prove it or they do not get the opportunity to prove the facts behind most conspiracy theories, hence they remain conspiracy theories.. Although that also is not always the case the Niburu theory does get pretty convincing once you do some research.

Between 1982 and 1984 various newspapers and magazines published stories about the 10^th planet, a planet so far that scientists described it as a mysterious object from outer space. (yes, their choice of words was much like everything else of the day).

In June of 1982 John Anderson of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California said that a 10^th planet is most likely the cause of orbital snags, this planet was said to be further than 4 billion miles away at the time.

Then between 1982 and 1983 there were various reports of Planet X (X meaning 10^th or 10 for the 10^th planet in our solar system). Some of the reports claimed that a gravitational force was causing irregularities in the orbits of Neptune and Uranus.

The observation of Uranus back in the 1840's led to the discovery of Neptune and the same irregularities that were found when Neptune was discovered is said to still exist, not the same irregularities but other ones that show that there should be a planet where one has not been discovered yet.

After the discovery of Neptune the orbital behaviour that led to the discovery of Neptune still existed with Uranus not having the full mass to cause that behaviour and that in turn led two Americans, William H Pickering and Percival Lowell to predict that there is another planet. Lowell called this planet Planet X.

After the prediction Pluto was found but scientists believed that was not the large planet that would be able to cause the irregularities with the planets.

Then between 1983 and 1984 Dr Thomas C van Flandern said that the irregularities could be explained by this undiscovered planet, the one that many call Niburu or Planet X.

In those days (1980's) it was predicted that “planet X” was between 2 and 5 times bigger than earth.

From those days the story lived on and still does until today, it has however gotten a few twists. In the 1990's Voyager 2 spacecraft found that the observed irregularities were due to miscalculations of Neptune's mass.

Scientists mostly “agree” that Planet X does not exist, however many feel this is just a coverup, a conspiracy. Some scientists believe that Planet X is indeed the only way to explain some anomalies in the outer Solar System.

Global warming has slowed down over the past 10 years, say scientists

The rate at which global temperatures are rising has slowed in the past decade, scientists said today.

In a report published today, the Met Office said the slow in the rate of warming was down to a combination of natural variation in the weather and pollution.

Scientists say one of the major factors is the rise in heavy industry and pollutant 'aerosols', particularly in Asia.
An upsurge in industrial emissions such as sulphur which are being pumped into the atmosphere reflects sunlight and could lead to a cooling effect.

Changes in the amount of water vapour in the stratosphere may also be a factor, the report suggests.


The admission will be seized upon by climate sceptics as evidence that man-made global warming has been overstated.

Since the 1970s, the long-term rate of global warming has been around 0.16C a decade but that slowed in the last 10 years to between 0.05C - 0.13C depending on which of the three major temperature record series are used.

Vicky Pope, head of climate science advice, said: 'The warming trend has decreased slightly. There's still a warming trend but it's not as rapid as it was before.

'The question is why has that happened. It's a question that sceptics often bring up.'

Bottom Falling Out of Global Ocean Surface Temps?

Having just returned from another New Orleans meeting – this time, a NASA A-Train satellite constellation symposium — I thought I would check the latest sea surface temperatures from our AMSR-E instrument.

The following image shows data updated through yesterday (October 27). Needless to say, there is no end in sight to the cooling. (Click on image for the full-size version).

Since these SST measurements are mostly unaffected by cloud cover like the traditional infrared measurements are, I consider this to be the most accurate high-time resolution SST record available…albeit only since mid-2002, when the Aqua satellite was launched.

I won’t make any predictions about whether SSTs will go as low as the 2007-08 La Nina event. I’ll leave that to others.

Early UK Snow Fall in Yorkshire

Snow fell as far south as Yorkshire as drivers were stranded in cars following blizzards in Scotland as winter came early to Britain.

Early snow covered parts of Aberdeenshire, the Cairngorms and Shetland - as well as the Pennines.

A number of drivers needed police assistance after getting stuck on the B974 at Cairn o’Mount, near Aberdeen.

The road became impassable due to snow and ice and was later closed.

Grampian Police spokesman Alan Majury said: “Several cars were stuck on the B974 and could not get along the road due to snow.

“The people are still with their vehicles and police officers are assisting them.”

The cold snap ends tomorrow (fri) as gale-force winds blow in to blast the country from tomorrow night until Sunday morning.

Snow to hit Britain

Winter will come early to Britain next week as snow is forecast for the north while the south will shiver in frosty sub-zero nights. 

The Telegraph

The cold snap will seem worse after temperatures soared to 75F (23C) last weekend.

Forecasters warned snow is due in Scotland and possibly northern England next week, with frost as far south as southern England, which will see bitter 48F (9C) daytime maximum temperatures.

“A northerly air stream in the middle part of next week means coldest conditions will probably be in Scotland, with sleet or snow showers and snow settling on higher ground,” said forecaster Brian Gaze of independent forecasters The Weather Outlook.

“Even southern England will feel distinctly chilly."

Forecasters Positive Weather Solutions have already predicted a ‘white-out’ winter almost as harsh as last winter - with widespread snow, temperatures down to -4F (-20C) and transport chaos.

New Zealand Snow Hits Farmers

Following a reasonably benign winter, the Southland region of New Zealand (NZ) has in the past week been hit by “the worst spring storm in living memory” according to the NZ Herald.

Six days of blizzards have caused deaths among new lambs numbering in the hundreds of thousands, and raised concern over the welfare of ewes yet to lamb.

Besides the effect of the cold weather itself, the continued snowfall has not allowed snow on the ground to thaw, making it much harder for stock to feed.

Coldest winter in 1,000 years on its way

After the record heat wave this summer, Russia's weather seems to have acquired a taste for the extreme.

Forecasters say this winter could be the coldest Europe has seen in the last 1,000 years.

The change is reportedly connected with the speed of the Gulf Stream, which has shrunk in half in just the last couple of years. Polish scientists say that it means the stream will not be able to compensate for the cold from the Arctic winds. According to them, when the stream is completely stopped, a new Ice Age will begin in Europe.

So far, the results have been lower temperatures: for example, in Central Russia, they are a couple of degrees below the norm. 

“Although the forecast for the next month is only 70 percent accurate, I find the cold winter scenario quite likely,” Vadim Zavodchenkov, a leading specialist at the Fobos weather center, told RT. “We will be able to judge with more certainty come November. As for last summer's heat, the statistical models that meteorologists use to draw up long-term forecasts aren't able to predict an anomaly like that.”
