Industrial hemp bill passes California Senate

Many of the Founding Fathers grew hemp - Wiki Image

We've all heard about how the Declaration of Independence was penned on hemp paper and how our founding fathers grew the stuff like it was, well, a weed. Their reasons for growing it were sensible enough: hemp offered unparalleled capital potential as a cash crop with its seemingly limitless industrial applications, not to mention its nutritional properties. A couple of centuries and a failed Drug War later, a California state senator is making an effort to revive some of the common sense found in this earlier, agrarian era.

On Tuesday, the California State Senate passed SB 676, Sen. Mark Leno's (San Francisco) bill, that would effectively legalize the production of hemp in the state for industrial purposes. Two prior attempts by the senator to regulate hemp production were vetoed by former Governor Schwarzenegger.

This measure would redefine “marijuana” to exclude industrial hemp. The new definition for hemp would include non-psychoactive fiber or oilseed crops with no more than 0.3 percent of THC. Crops would have to undergo testing to certify that their THC content was within the legal limit, mimicking established protocol in Canada.

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The US Supreme Court ordered California Monday to free thousands of prison inmates, saying chronic overcrowding violated inmates' rights -- but one judge warned the ruling was "outrageous."

In a narrow 5-4 majority ruling upholding a lower court decision, the top US court said the release is the only way to address the constitutional violation of cruel and unusual punishment.

"This case arises from serious constitutional violations in California's prison system. The violations have persisted for years. They remain uncorrected," Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote in a majority opinion.

Welcome to the Greatest Depression: California’s Best and Brightest Face Homelessness, Poverty

I don’t know why CBS insists on calling what’s happening economically in this country the “Great Recession.” It’s the Greatest Depression. It is quickly shaping up to be worse than the first Great Depression.
At least CBS admits unemployment is not a measly 9.5 percent like the government claims. It puts it at 17%. Actually it is closer to 23% and will soon eclipse the unemployment rate during the first engineered depression.
Most people realize Obama’s “Summer of Recovery” was a cruel joke. There will not be a recovery. The plan is to turn the U.S. into yet another third-world slave labor gulag. It will take some time to wreck what was once the most productive and prosperous nation in the world. In the meantime, people need to start educating themselves. Turning off CBS and the rest of the corporate media would be an auspicious first step.
I can’t help but think all the intelligent people in the video below are spinning their wheels as they are systematically being pauperized and converted into the latest class of serfs by the banksters. I wonder how many of them will vote for Democrats, Republicans, and the trademarked Tea Party next month. Doing so will seal their fate. The political class in this country works for the international bankers and its transnational corporations. And that includes Tea Party Sarah and the RINO neocons masquerading as our “independent” saviors.
The 99ers are about to have their homes stolen and their meager unemployment checks cut. They will be out in the street. Basically the only choice they have is to get rid of the government now selling them and their children out to a global elite that specializes in converting the planet into a slave labor plantation. Most of the world works for less than two or three dollars a day. The 99ers are about to join them if they don’t get educated fast and stop playing by the rules. It’s a rigged game. The only other choice is to be a slave.

Hemp Is the Far Bigger Economic Issue Hiding Behind Legal Marijuana

Prop 19 will open up California to hemp, a multi-billion-dollar crop that has been a staple of human agriculture for thousands of years.

Harvey Wasserman
Alternet

Hemp is the far bigger economic issue hiding behind legal marijuana.

If the upcoming pot legalization ballot in California were decided by hemp farmers like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, it would be no contest. For purely economic reasons, if you told the Constitutional Convention in 1787 that the nation they were founding would someday make hemp illegal, they would have laughed you out of the room.

If California legalizes pot, it will save the state millions in avoided legal and imprisonment costs, while raising it millions in taxes.

But with legal marijuana will come legal hemp. That will open up the Golden State to a multi-billion-dollar crop that has been a staple of human agriculture for thousands of years, and that could save the farms of thousands of American families.

Could California's Prop. 19 Lead to Pot Legalization Across the U.S.?

The cult movie Reefer Madness, released in 1938, warned of the horrors of marijuana — or, as a movie poster put it, "the torturer that never stops." The film was an extreme portrait, full of death and rape and depravity, but it was only an exaggerated version of the real fears America long had about marijuana. Yet in recent years, as medical use of marijuana has gained acceptance and the backing of the law, that century-old national consensus has slowly broken down. And now, this election season, it could completely shatter, starting in California.

Next month, Californians will vote on Proposition 19: the Regulate, Control and Tax Cannabis Act of 2010. Prop 19 would make recreational use of marijuana entirely legal — and allow cash-strapped cities to raise funds by taxing it. Completely legalizing pot may sound like a radical idea, but not to the people who are actually going to decide: the latest Public Policy Institute of California poll found that 52% of likely voters support Prop 19, with just 41% who oppose it. (See pictures of cannabis conventions in California and Colorado.)

In fact, Prop 19 is polling better than Senator Barbara Boxer or her Republican opponent, Carly Fiorina. It is also outpolling the gubernatorial candidates, Democrat Jerry Brown and Republican Meg Whitman. It is gaining support as the election grows nearer — and it has the backing of the state Service Employees International Union, perhaps the state's most powerful union.
