How to Make a GMO Lobbyist Squirm

By James Corbett

Glyphosate kills. Don’t believe the mounting scientific evidence on the subject? Then just ask a GMO-chemical lobbyist to drink a glass of it and see what happens…

GMOs Are Destroying Heirloom Seeds and Our Food Security

Aaron Dykes

A report from Baker Creek Heirloom Rare Seed's catalog explains how the genetic engineering of crops is having real life consequences for business, as well as food security.

Just from the perspective of a medium sized business, Baker Creek and its partners in the seed industry have lost literally hundreds of thousands of dollars as a result of GMO corn contamination.

Baker Creek began testing their Heirloom corn varieties for GMO contamination, and found that more than 50% of their more than a dozen varieties were contaminated. Those varieties, most of which were hand passed down through countless generations, have now been lost – forever, unless a clean source is found and recovered.

This Secret to Massive Yields Could Rock the Farming World

According to a new study, it lies in an unpatented technique...

Heather Callaghan

What will ultimately feed the world? Is it really genetic engineering? Is it biodiversity?

What can maintain and stoke that diversity - I mean, make it really flourish with bountiful food using less land?

Of course, using this discovery might mean severing ties with monolithic Big Ag and chemical corps whose actions could block this dream from becoming reality. Monoculture fans need not apply.

Dept of Ag Shuts Down Cell of Potential “Agri-Terrorists”: Seed Libraries Outlawed in Pennsylvania

Daisy Luther

It looks like Michigan is not the only state with a Department of Agriculture that is adamant about the best interests of their citizens. Residents in Pennsylvania can now breathe a little bit easier since an illegal enterprise has been shut down.

The Joseph T. Simpson Public Library in Mechanicsburg was participating in an activity that put the entire ecosystem of the state at risk.

In an astonishing act of hubris, they were running a seed library, right there amongst the books, in the very facility where small children go to have stories read to them.

I’m not making this up. A SEED LIBRARY.

50 Members of Congress Urge EPA and USDA to Reject New GMO Crops

GE Crops Would Lead to Dramatic Increase in Use of Toxic, War-era Herbicide 2,4-D

Activist Post

Fifty Members of Congress led by Representatives Peter DeFazio (D-OR-04) and Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-ME-01) wrote today to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) expressing “grave concerns” over Dow Chemical's Enlist Duo™ herbicide and new varieties of genetically engineered (GE) corn and soy the herbicide mixture would be used with.

“In the absence of leadership from the agencies tasked to protect our health, our food, and our environment, it is up to Congress to put pressure on the Obama Administration to do what's right. On the cusp of the 5-week August recess, 50 Members of Congress sent a clear message to USDA and EPA: reject the next wave of pesticide promoting crops before it is too late,” said Colin O'Neil, director of government affairs at Center for Food Safety.

“If either USDA or EPA had any surprises in store over the August recess, they’d better think again,” added O’Neil.

Food Forward: New PBS Series Explores 'Food Rebel' Innovation

Heather Callaghan

The food freedom bug has turned heads at PBS. Food Forward TV is an upcoming series that basically showcases people striving to dramatically transform the way we eat in the United States. "Food rebels" and outliers, so to speak.

Across 50 cities, it showcases farmers, chefs, scientists, fishermen and ranchers with ways that deviate from the "conventional" large agricultural and food system. Some of their methods emulate traditional farming - which only seem unique to newer generations - but most are new, innovative solutions to feed the world.

Will the world pay attention?

Food Forward TV comes to PBS in September - watch the preview below.

The featured pioneers are safely upping nutrition for humans, animals and the soil and eliminating losses through exorbitant waste by utilizing the ecology of the whole farm instead of large-scale compartmentalization. You may recognize some faces - one of them is Mark McAfee of Organic Pastures Dairy who has taken on the FDA for its aggression toward small, fresh milk farmers and its adamant ban on interstate sales.

The makers of the program wish to emphasize that they not affiliated in any way with a Los Angeles outreach of the same name. See more footage of the PBS series HERE

Arlington, Texas -- A family with a passion for gardening and conscious living was raided by the Arlington SWAT team early Friday morning. All 8 adults present in the house were initially handcuffed at the gunpoint of heavily armed SWAT officers, including the mother of a 22 month old and a two week old baby who was separated from her children during the raid.

Monsanto can sue farmers when GMO contamination goes over one percent of their crop

At the Justice Begins with Seeds biosafety conference held in Seattle August 2-3, it was announced that a recent court decision prevented Monsanto from suing farmers for patent infringement when their crops become genetically contaminated with lab-engineered patented seeds. But the ruling is insufficient to protect farmers in the real world, where contamination events are often much higher than only one percent of a field, as specifically prescribed in the ruling.

The June 2013 decision dismissing OSGATA v. Monsanto discussed in the letter by Jim Gerritsen, president of the Organic Seed Growers and Trade Association, protects farmers from being sued for “inadvertent contamination” of “approximately one percent” of their crops. Gerritsen sent the letter in lieu of his appearance.

That letter, reproduced at Good Food Web, has now gone viral, leading to some misunderstanding about the significance of the court’s decision and the protections afforded US farmers.

Employee Bonus: Teens Working For Monsanto Sprayed by Crop Duster

Related Posts Plugin for WordPress, Blogger...
Daisy Luther

Remember when farm work was a wholesome summer job for kids looking for a little extra pocket money?

Back in the day, teens could work outside, learn about farming, and do some healthy physical labor without major health risks. Working on a farm built physical strength, skills, and character.

Now, with the advent of toxic agricultural practices, farm work can be deadly because of exposure to glyphosate and other deadly chemicals.

Nearly 80 teenagers working for Team Corn, a Princeton, Ill.-based company that contracts for Monsanto were sent to the hospital yesterday after a crop-duster sprayed fungicide on the field where they were working.

Is GMO Really Necessary to ‘Feed the World’?

Related Posts Plugin for WordPress, Blogger...
We are continuously inundated with the message that our world is overpopulated because humanity is reproducing at a rate much faster than the Earth’s resources can possibly accommodate us.

Melissa Melton

This propaganda is pushed on us as an excuse for all manner of messing with mother nature: from risky geoengineering projects — to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations set to cost the economy billions in revenue and millions of jobs — to ethanol production which was supposed to be “greener” but which studies have shown takes more fossil energy to produce than the actual energy we derive from it.

Food scarcity is a particular driver under the Malthusian argument that our human population increases geometrically while our food supply increases arithmetically, thus humanity will ultimately no longer be sustainable. Malthus has been proven wrong time and again, but the scaremongering persists.

Survey: only 15% of farmers would eat GMO food

Jon Rappoport

The British survey was funded by Barclays Bank and done in collaboration with Farmers Weekly.

Only 15% of farmers polled said they would eat GMO food. Talk about a blanket rejection. It can’t get much clearer than that.

Obviously, these backward farmers want to protect their own health. Who ever heard of such a thing! How dare they! They’re supposed to follow the party line. They’re supposed to say, “Yum yum, give me some GM.”

Well, funny things happen when people consider their own bodies. They tell you what they really think.

Ag-gag in Action: National Geographic Photographer Arrested After Aerial Photos

Related Posts Plugin for WordPress, Blogger...

Heather Callaghan

Ag-gag laws are cropping up like Whac-a-Mole across the states in an attempt to protect large-scale farming and cattle operations from those pesky activists who find out about abuse and cruelty. Instead of addressing the systemic issue of transparency and animal/food safety, lobbying leads to more laws that inhibit the freedom to speak out about dismal conditions - clear 1st Amendment violations. Always in the name of "safety" and protecting trade secrets. It's one thing to keep people from committing theft, destruction of property, breaking and entering, intellectual property theft and privacy violations - which basic laws support. But it's wholly another to prosecute well-intentioned tourists or try peaceful protesters as terrorists.

The latest to get burned is prominent world photographer and freelancer for National Geographic, George Steinmetz. He often gets government clearance to roam the airways for his aerial photography and uses a motorized paraglider with parachute and what looks like a lawn chair.

Even though the ensuing brief arrest on June 28th, and $270 bail each stems from trespassing, the underlying cause (fear) and reason for phone call to the sheriff appear to stem from upholding the Farm Animal and Field Crop and Research Facilities Protection Act. It was one of the first state laws of its kind enacted in 1990 and criminalizes farm photography.

Ecowarriors destroy 6,000 GM beets in Oregon

Rady Ananda

To protect against genetic contamination, a group of ecodefenders destroyed 6,000 genetically modified beets in Jackson County, Oregon earlier this month. The FBI is involved and has deemed the act “economic sabotage,” despite that Syngenta is creating products that economically destroy organic crops through genetic contamination and pesticide aerial drift.

When cross contamination occurs, then our corrupt judicial system blames the victim farmer who is ordered to pay Monsanto for the company’s failure to control its frankenseeds that contaminated her organic crops.

And they report that shit with a straight face.

Also in Oregon, because our corrupt government won’t join the EU in banning neonicotinoids, someone at Target ordered several flowering linden trees (Tilia americana) in the parking lot to be doused with the poison and surprise, surprise, tens of thousands of bees died when over 150 nearby hives also succumbed.

This, while colony collapse disorder continues unabated. “An estimated 10 billion hives have been lost since colony collapse disorder first emerged in 2006,” reports the LA Times.

Monsanto's Game Over: Extreme Toxicity of Roundup Destroys Justification for GM Agriculture

Sayer Ji

If Monsanto's Roundup herbicide were actually 'safer than table salt' as they once advertised, the consumption of GM food wouldn't be nearly as controversial. The truth, however, is that virtually all GM food today contains residues of this toxic chemical, which disproves that GM and non-GM foods are "substantially equivalent," which is the primary doctrinal justification behind why GM foods are not properly safety tested and millions in this country eating them are living and breathing guinea pigs.

There was a time when Monsanto claimed their patented herbicide Roundup was "safer than table salt" and "practically nontoxic," and aggressively marketed this message until 1996, when they were ordered by Dennis C. Vacco, the Attorney General of New York, to pull the ads.[1]

Fast forward 15 years, after millions of farmers around the world bought into the false advertising and who, as a result, are now driving the production and use of several hundred million pounds of the chemical annually, Roundup herbicide is beginning to look eerily like Monsanto's Agent Orange 2.0.

FBI Calls Destruction of GMO Sugar Beets in Oregon 'Economic Sabotage'

In a breaking development, the FBI confirms that 1,500 GM Sugar Beet plants were destroyed this month in Oregon, in what they are calling an act of "Economic Sabotage."

Sayer Ji

When GM pollen blows into a non-GM farmer's fields and irreversibly contaminates his crop with 'biopollution,' who does the law side with? Historically, Monsanto. Also, it's not called 'economic sabotage' but rather 'copyright infringement,' and the victim not the aggressor is threatened with economic ruin.

When Monsanto's unapproved and therefore illegal GM wheat is found years after open field trials growing freely in an Oregon wheat field, the entire state crop's export fate is held in limbo, jeopardizing the present and future living of thousands of farmers and their dependents, with Monsanto receiving little more than a reprimand, followed by rapid USDA assurance that despite a lack of approval their GM wheat is "safe."

Given the unfair rules of the game, no wonder some folks in Oregon, having been treated much like feudal peasants, are taking things into their own pitchfork-bearing hands.
