Protesters destroy controversial GMO field trial
Food First
In Wetteren, a municipality in the Belgian province of East Flanders, activists succeeded in damaging the GM potatoes being trialled for blight resistance, despite a large contingent of police officers who had been ordered to guard the GM trial. The officers were unable to stop the 300-400 or more peaceful protesters of all ages, who included local people.
During the protest organized by the Belgian Field Liberation Movement (FLM) - an informal collective consisting of farmers, scientists, consumers, and environmental activists, protesters climbed over a high fence and pulled up GM potato plants. The trial was also allegedly sprayed with herbicide. Some 40 people were arrested.
The non-violent direct action had been announced in advance with the FLM saying they planned to remove the GM potatoes and replant the field with non-GM blight resistant potatoes in a peaceful and public manner.
A sympathetic farmer was quoted as saying, "They [the GM lobby] talk a lot about farmers, but we are never heard. This type of action strengthens us and seems like the only way forward for consumers and small producers who are independent of powerful interest groups like big agribusiness."

Cows engineered to produce "human milk," and why Bessie will never, ever replace you.

Well, they say they've done it.
For years researchers in China, with the backing of a "major biotechnology company" have been working to genetically modify cows to produce human milk, and The Telegraph says that they've done it:
The scientists have successfully introduced human genes into 300 dairy cows to produce milk with the same properties as human breast milk.
The scientists behind the research believe milk from herds of genetically modified cows could provide an alternative to human breast milk and formula milk for babies, which is often criticised as being an inferior substitute.

Coke, BPA, and the limits of ‘green capitalism’

By Tom Philpott
"Coca-Cola goes green," announced a 2010 Forbes article. Indeed, the beverages giant maintains partnerships with Big Green groups like Conservation International andWorld Wildlife Fund. It recently even completed its takeover of Honest Tea, an organic bottled-tea company. It would clearly like to be seen as a paragon of "green capitalism" -- the idea that doing good and doing well go hand in hand.
Let's put aside questions over what can possibly be "green" about a business model geared to sucking in huge amounts of drinking water, blasting it with what are probably toxic sweeteners and other dodgy substances, and then packaging it in little aluminum cans and plastic bottles and sending them far and wide, to be chilled (using fossil energy) before consumption.
OK, so within those tight constraints, Coca-Cola says it wants to be a "green company." So ... WTF? Last week, Coca-Cola shareholders voted by a 3-to-1 margin to continue using BPA, a toxic industrial chemical, in the lining of its soft-drink cans.

Propaganda Alert: AP reports Small Farms are Exempt from Food Safety Bill
Activist Post
A day after the Food Safety Modernization Act (S.510) passed cloture with a vote of 74-25, theAssociated Press put out some world-class propaganda claiming that "Somesmall farms would be exempt from government efforts to prevent foodborne illness under a Senate agreement on food safety legislation." The article claims a last-minute deal was struck to allow small farms to "avoid expensive food safety plans:"
That all sounds well and good, but it only exempts them from having to submit food safety plans, not from inspections that they get billed for, licensing requirements with expensive quality controls, product confiscation without cause or recourse, and even armed raids. We've already seen all of these ugly faces of food fascism unfold in America. Private organic co-ops have beenraided by armed guards, lemonade standsfined and closed down, Amish Dairies raided, and a family farm had 50,000 pounds of cheese confiscated.

The article claims a last-minute deal was struck to allow small farms to "avoid expensive food safety plans:"
The agreement brokered by Democratic Sen. Jon Tester of Montana and announced Thursday would attempt to allay concerns of smaller farms about a food safety bill now pending in the Senate.
That bill would give the FDA more authority to recall tainted products, increase inspections of food processors and require producers to follow stricter standards for keeping food safe.
The agreement brokered by Tester would allow farmers who make less than $500,000 a year in revenue and sell directly to consumers, restaurants or grocery stores within their states or within 275 miles of their farms to avoid expensive food safety plans required of larger operations.
This type of food tyranny is only likely to increase when the food safety bill passes, seizing the righteousness of protecting the people. Evidently, the bill essentially transfers the authority over food regulation enforcement from the FDA to the Department of Homeland Securitywho brought us the liberty-killing, child-molesting TSA. Finally, this bill will do nothing to protect the public from foodborne diseases, because it does nothing to fundamentally change the factory food production methods that allow them to fester.
The bill will allow the big agri-cartel to further consolidate the food industry, thus gaining even more control over food and humanity itself. This, clearly, is the real purpose of this bill. We can expect to see the "authorities" raiding a lot more small, private health-food cooperatives like in the video below. Tyranny is coming to a family farm or organic co-op near you.
