"I therefore authorized targeted air strikes if necessary to help forces in Iraq as they fight to break the siege and protect the civilians trapped there,” Obama said.
Obama reassured Americans that he will “not allow the United States to be drawn into fighting another war in Iraq,” even as he stated that “America is coming to help.”
As ABC News reports, “The announcements marked the deepest American engagement in Iraq since U.S. troops withdrew in late 2011 after nearly a decade of war.”
Although Obama claims that combat troops (in addition to those already stationed in Iraq) will not return, he also stated that, if ISIS reaches the city of Erbil, he would authorize the targeted strikes.
As I have pointed out in previous articles, the reason that Western powers stood idly by while the death squad agents known as ISIS that they funded and directed seized territory all across Iraq were twofold.
First, it was an attempt to destabilize the government of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki in an effort to weaken the Iraq-Iran-Syria alliance and end shipments of Iranian aid to Syria.
Second, the reign of ISIS can now be used as a justification to engage in a “targeted” bombing campaign across the border of Syria for the purpose of doing further damage to the secular Assad government forces and creating a buffer zone to be used for further staging grounds for Syrian death squads.
Ultimately, of course, the goal is to weaken Russia through the destruction of its ally and one of its last “sphere-of-influence” states.
