Man Sentenced 18 Months for Lying to FEMA

by Mark Daniels
As reported by KATV 7 News, an Arkansas man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for making a false claim to the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
46-year-old Anthony Owens Sr. was ordered to pay almost $11,000 in restitution, in addition to his 18 month prison sentence after falsely claiming he needed disaster assistance from Hurricane Katrina.
Owens pleaded guilty in December to filing a false claim with FEMA after Hurricane Katrina. According to records, Owens received $10,780 after he told FEMA that he lived in an apartment in New Orleans when the hurricane hit.
Reports indicate that Owens was neither a New Orleans resident, nor was he in the city when the disaster struck.
Granted, Mr. Owens pleaded guilty to the crime and should be sentenced accordingly, but the sentence seems rather harsh considering the fact that celebrities and politicians seem to get away with much less time, if any, for similar crimes.  Ordinary Americans seem to receive the brunt of "justice" from  our "Judicial System".
