Google to Allow Medical Marijuana Advertisements

Google currently does not permit ads to be linked to the words "marijuana" or "cannabis", but that may change eventually.

The most dominant Internet company recently gave a $120,000 donation of services to the medical marijuana advocacy group Michigan Compassion.

The services are in the form of advertising through Google's Adwords program to be used to promote medical cannabis. 

The ads will still not be linked to "cannabis" or "marijuana" search terms. Instead they'll be triggered by terms like "chemotherapy nausea".

Libertarian VP Hopeful Slams Obama Over Medical Marijuana Raids

Visiting a Denver medical marijuana dispensary Thursday, Libertarian vice presidential nominee and retired Superior Court Judge Jim Gray urged passage of Amendment 64, the statewide initiative to regulate marijuana like alcohol that will appear on this year’s ballot.

Judge Gray was also critical of the Obama Administration’s interference in Colorado’s state-regulated medical marijuana system. Last week, the Justice Department issued letters to 10 state-legal medical marijuana facilities demanding that they shut down. Fifty-seven total businesses have now received such letters.

Judge Gray is running for vice president on the Libertarian ticket with presidential nominee and former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson. Johnson has expressed strong support for Amendment 64.

North Dakota To Vote on Medical Marijuana This Fall

North Dakota could be voting on medical marijuana in November. Proponents of a medical marijuana initiative there handed in about 20,000 signatures to the secretary of state's office Monday.

Fargo, North Dakota's largest city, barely tops 100,000 people. (Wikimedia.org) They need 13,500 valid voter signatures to qualify for the ballot. Election officials have about a month to review the signatures and decide whether they are valid. 

Sponsored by North Dakotans for Compassionate Care, the initiative would allow people suffering from specified illnesses—including cancer, glaucoma, and PTSD—to use marijuana with a doctor's recommendation. Patients could possess up to 2 ½ ounces and could grow up to 12 plants in an enclosed, locked space. Designated caregivers who grow for more than one patient are limited to 30 plants.

Marijuana Rescheduling Lawsuit Finally Moving Forward

A decade after the Coalition for Rescheduling Cannabis(CRC) filed its petition seeking to have marijuana moved from Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act, the federal courts will finally review the scientific evidence regarding the therapeutic efficacy of marijuana. The DC Circuit Court of Appeals announced late last week that it will hear oral arguments in October in a lawsuit filed by Americans for Safe Access (ASA) to force the government to act.

The lawsuit, Americans for Safe Access vs. DEA, was filed in January after the DEA denied the CRC's rescheduling petition the previous July. The DEA took nine years to decide to do nothing about rescheduling marijuana.

Several hundred -- perhaps as many as a thousand -- medical marijuana patients, providers, and supporters took to the streets of Oakland Monday afternoon to put President Obama on notice that they are extremely unhappy with his administration's crackdown on dispensaries. The president arrived at the Fox Theater in downtown Oakland for a fundraising event later Monday evening.

The crowd was up in arms over the federal offensive that has seen hundreds of California dispensaries shuttered by threats of asset forfeiture or criminal prosecution since the state's four US Attorneys announced the joint offensive last fall. But it was even more incensed by the May raids on Richard Lee's Oaksterdam University and last week's issuance of asset forfeiture lawsuits aimed Harborside Health Center, the nation's largest medical marijuana dispensary.

US Rep. Sam Farr (D-CA) Tuesday introduced House Resolution 6134, the Truth in Trials Act, which would allow defendants in federal criminal prosecutions the ability to use medical marijuana evidence at trial. The bipartisan legislation has 18 cosponsors so far, including Reps. Barney Frank (D-MA) and Ron Paul (R-TX).

This is not the first time around for the act -- a version was first introduced in 2003 and it has been introduced repeatedly since then -- but this time it comes as federal crackdowns in states like California, Colorado, and Montana are creating an increase in federal drug prosecutions against medical marijuana providers. Since the crackdowns began, at least 70 people who were medical marijuana patients or providers have been indicted on federal drug charges.

Marijuana was classified as a Schedule I Controlled Substance in 1972 by the United States Congress. This was because, at the time, it was not seen as a substance with an accepted medical use. Over the last 16 years, however, proponents have argued that weed does have its uses for medical treatment.

Studies have shown that the use of medical cannabis can help to relieve the symptoms of cancer and the discomfort and nausea that come with chemotherapy, AIDS, pain, epilepsy, glaucoma and multiple sclerosis as well as other medical conditions. It is also used to stimulate the appetite of a person who is not eating for reasons other than actively trying to lose weight (cachexia).

Marijuana is considered a major cash crop. It is estimated that the industry pulls in tens of billions of dollars. While there is no concrete evidence of how much growers earn, there is a lot of potential for governments to reap the financial benefits of legal weed.

There is no surprise in the above clinical picture. Doctors, medical officials and the American federal government have got to be kidding themselves and everyone else with their negative and closed-minded attitudes toward medical marijuana. Though medical marijuana laws are being passed in state after state, oncologists prefer to remain stupid about how it can be used for cancer patients.

WASHINGTON (AFP) - A group of US representatives plan to introduce legislation that will legalize marijuana and allow states to legislate its use, pro-marijuana groups said Wednesday.

The legislation would limit the federal government's role in marijuana enforcement to cross-border or inter-state smuggling, and allow people to legally grow, use or sell marijuana in states where it is legal.

The bill, which is expected to be introduced on Thursday by Republican Representative Ron Paul and Democratic Representative Barney Frank, would be the first ever legislation designed to end the federal ban on marijuana.

Francois Arcand says he doesn't want gravely ill people to think of medical marijuana as their last hope because of all the red tape that surrounds it.

The 42-year-old had to first find a doctor who would help him get a Health Canada licence to use marijuana to ease his epilepsy. Then he waited a year for approval.

Meanwhile, the Ottawa man found quicker and more personalized relief at a cannabis dispensary.

"Cannabis should have been my front-line therapy and not a desperate last resort," Arcand said, adding that Health Canada needs to issue more licences.

These researchers have discovered that three compounds found in cannabis leaves can help to reduce and control seizures in epilepsy. Dr. Whalley, who is leading the research at the department of pharmacy at the University of Reading, said tests in animals had shown the marijuana compounds effective at preventing seizures and convulsions while also having fewer side effects than existing epilepsy drugs.

Cannabinoids, the active components of marijuana, inhibit tumor growth in laboratory animals and also kill cancer cells. Their use in the case of childhood cancer is compassionate.

And lucky for us, cannabis is also an excellent treatment for radiation sickness and exposure.

Bipartisan Coalition Urges Sensible Drug Policy

Washington -- In a sign of growing bipartisan Congressional support for reforming our nation’s drug laws, a coalition of Republicans and Democrats today offered three bills that would ensure fair treatment of cannabis businesses under tax and banking law, and change existing law to reflect the medical efficacy of marijuana. The bills were authored by Congressman Pete Stark (D-CA), Congressman Barney Frank (D-MA), and Congressman Jared Polis (D-CO).

Stark’s bill – the Small Business Tax Equity Act – would allow medical marijuana dispensaries to take the full range of business expense deductions on their federal tax returns, just like every other legal business is permitted to do under the law. It is co-sponsored by Congressman Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) and Congressman Ron Paul (R-TX), as well as Frank and Polis.

Funny how when it’s immigration, Arizona Governor Jan Brewer claims states rights and opposes federal interference, but when it’s the state voting for medical marijuana, she invites federal interference.

(East Valley Tribune) Saying she fears people could wind up in legal trouble, Gov. Jan Brewer on Tuesday ordered the state attorney general to get a federal court to rule whether Arizona can implement its medical marijuana law. 

[S]he said a letter from Dennis Burke, the U.S. Attorney for Arizona, to her state health chief appeared to be a warning that anyone involved — from patients and dispensary operators to landlords and even state health officials — could wind up being prosecuted by his office.
