Cell phone use is only a couple of decades old, and just like anything else we use in this world, revelations regarding their use have not been properly examined and studied until now.

The use of cellular phones has become the norm today for people of all ages, using it to stay connected and keep in touch with friends and family. Almost everyone you see today has a cell phone. That’s why it’s so important to share documentaries like this one which are just starting to surface. 

The Harmful Effects of Cell Phones and How to Reduce It

We all know it by now, cell phones emit radio-frequency energy. The one thing still up for debate is whether or not this radio-frequency energy is harmful to the human body, and if it is to what extent.

Here is what we do know, radio-frequency is a form of electromagnetic radiation (EMR). EMR is a wave-like energy that is emitted and absorbed by charged particles. In the case of a cell phone, the phone emits the EMR (in the form of radio-frequency) and the human operating it absorbs it. EMR can be classified into one of two categories: (1) Ionizing – the more powerful of the two, (2) Non-Ionizing – the less powerful and lower frequency.

Radio-frequency has been identified as being a part of the non-ionizing variety. That being the case, the harm it may or may not inflict cannot be as detrimental as certain ionizing EMR’s such as X-rays and radiation therapy - both of which are recognized by the National Cancer Institute as being capable of increasing the risk of cancer.

One day in the middle of May 2010, SDG&E workers came to my La Mesa home to install a new meter for both my gas and electric service. They did the same for my neighbors. I remember their trucks and the boxes on the sidewalk. How quickly they did it and left. How we turned off our computer and TV to prevent a power surge.

When we least expect it, life sets us a challenge, it is sometimes said. 

I really didn't pay much attention to these installations, assuming that they were similar to the old ones, just digital. Boy, was I wrong. As an active, retired educator, I never expected that the challenge would come in the form of harmful radiation coming from these new utility "smart" meters installed by SDG&E. But that is just what has happened.

Please note that everyone in our county and throughout SDG&E's territory had these installed in the past year and a half, except for a handful of people. None of us were told of any risks. 

WHO Lists Cell Phones as Cancer Hazard

The United Nations’ health agency, the World Health Organization, now lists mobile phone use in the same “carcinogenic hazard” category as lead, engine exhaust and chloroform.

But no adverse health effects have been established, the agency explains.

The decision to list cell phones as a cancer hazard came after a team of 31 scientists from 14 countries examined peer-reviewed studies on cell phone safety.

A Council of Europe committee examined evidence that thetechnologies have "potentially harmful" effects on humans, and concluded that immediate action was required to protect children.

In a report, the committee said it was crucial to avoid repeating the mistakes made when public health officials were slow to recognise the dangers of asbestos, tobacco smoking and lead in petrol.
