Report: US Stationing Marines In Ghana On Eve Of Nigerian Elections

Brandon Turbeville

According to a report by Nigerian Watch, a UK-based magazine for Nigerian communities, hundreds of US Marines are now being stationed in Ghana as the Nigerian elections begin to take place.

The Marines are allegedly being stationed in Ghana so as to be available to remove American personnel from Nigeria if the elections result in violence, a possibility that some analysts are expecting.

Nigerian Watch reports that “that there may be post-election violence, especially after the results are announced as neither the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP) or the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) is likely to accept defeat.”

Nigerian Watch reported that one of its sources has claimed that two Hercules C-130 airplanes touched down at Kotoka Airport a week ago and carried three helicopters inside.

The source also allegedly stated that “There are well over 200 marines and they are camped at the airport. The helicopters are believed to be meant for the quick evacuation of Americans in Nigeria in the event of violence."

Of course, if Nigerian Watch’s reports are to be believed then it is possible that the marines may indeed be in Ghana as a preparation to evacuate Americans from a violence-ridden post-election Nigeria.

However, considering the fact that Nigeria has been struggling with a surge in the activity of Boko Haram, an ISIS-linked and hence US/NATO-linked terrorist organization, others have legitimate cause to wonder whether these troops are being stationed for other purposes.

Not only are Boko Haram’s connections to ISIS (and hence US intelligence) well-documented, but the terrorists groups’ own military interests in terms of territory and destabilization are conveniently the same as those of the US and AFRICOM whenever one views it on the map. Taken into consideration the geopolitical and geostrategic interests of these locations – particularly between the US and China – and one can easily begin to see the role that Boko Haram plays in the battle between two major powers over natural resources, investment, and influence.

Whatever the true nature of the military troop placement may be (assuming Nigerian Watch’s sources are correct), given the track record of the US geopolitical movements in recent years, it is undoubtedly a development to watch closely.
