Food History in the Making
Catherine J. Frompovich
One of the more poignant lines former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Tip O’Neill is famous for having uttered, “All politics is local,” certainly applies to what happened in the little, but mighty, State of Connecticut over the weekend of June 1 and 2, 2013.
Connecticut House Bill 6527,
An Act Concerning Genetically Engineered Foods
, was passed by both chambers of that state legislative body and becomes the first GMO labeling law in the United States. Congratulations, kudos, hurrah, and all other accolades go to GMO Free Connecticut Coalition members for their dogged determination and stick-to-itiveness in defeating the GMO behemoth Monsanto and their anti-GMO-labeling cartel friends.
It seems that Connecticut Yankee resolve and grit enabled a “David slaying Goliath-like” event to take place, when only last November, free-thinking California became shell shocked by Monsanto and GMO friends mega-million-dollar advertising fear campaign to defeat Prop 37. What a shame for California, the state where much of America’s fresh produce is grown.
However, every state in the United States of America now has a role model to follow, and I’ve prepared what I call:
A Playbook for Getting GMOs Labeled
Stand in your power as a constituent and let your representatives hear you.
Too often, we give up our power.
But once you realize that you can make a difference, that’s when change happens.
Also, stay the course and keep fighting.

Congratulations Connecticut, we passed the first GMO labeling law in the country! This GMO labeling victory belongs to each and every one of you. Yesterday was an historic day that we will all remember. We are so thrilled that many of you came to the Capitol to share it with us. After a unanimous vote in the Senate on Saturday night [June 1, 2013] and an overwhelming vote in the House yesterday of 134-3, [June 2, 2013] it is clear your legislators heard you!

Here’s the bill that passed. Present it to your state legislators to get the ball rolling in your state and the remaining 49 states.

Contact these in-the-know folks for pointers and how-to methodologies. They did it and probably would be willing to help out in other states.

When you get a GMO labeling bill introduced into your state legislature’s bill hopper, let the good folks at Food Safety News know so they can write about it.

A plan to consider that may be worth following to conclusion.
___________
Nothing would please me more than writing 49 articles about GMO labeling bills introduced into those states. Isn’t it about time consumers knew what we are eating? Isn’t it about time you were able to tell from a product label what’s in your food, especially whether there are GMOs in it? Isn’t it about time food buying consumers became savvy about how you spend your food dollars and exercise the “power of the purse.” Why not tell your supermarket managers, grocery and health food store owners that you don’t want to be forced to buy ‘stealth’ GMO ingredients. Isn’t it about time?
