FBI agent kills Chechen man during questioning about Boston bombing suspects and 2011 murder
Ibragim Todashev
mugshot: Orange County Jail
Madison Ruppert
An FBI agent shot and killed 27-year-old Ibragim Todashev of Orlando, Florida in his apartment during questioning about his relationship with
Tamerlan Tsarnaev
, the
Boston Marathon bombing
suspect
who was killed by police
.
Anonymous state and federal law enforcement officials familiar with the situation told
ABC
that Todashev “just went crazy” and pulled a knife during his interview with the FBI.
An unnamed official said that an FBI agent was stabbed several times but the FBI said in
a press release
that the agent sustained “non-life threatening” injuries.
“During the confrontation, the individual was killed and the agent sustained non-life threatening injuries,” FBI Special Agent Dave Couvertier, Orlando region spokesman, told the
Orlando Sentinel
in an emailed statement.
“As the incident is under review, we have no further details at this time,” Couvertier added.
Law enforcement officials said that Todashev was being questioned about the nature of his relationship with Tsarnaev.
Todashev reportedly spoke to Tsarnaev shortly before the Marathon bombing though according to ABC, sources familiar with the case said that there is no indication that Todashev was tied to the bombing.
According to
NBC
, investigators said that Todashev “confessed to the agent in Florida that he played a role in a triple murder in 2011 in which three men were discovered slain in an apartment in Waltham, Mass.”
The three men were found with their throats slit and their bodies covered with marijuana. A spokesperson for the Middlesex County District Attorney’s office, which is handling the investigation, said they do not discuss ongoing investigations.
Media outlets are reporting contradictory information about the nature of the questioning.
The Orlando Sentinel quoted federal law enforcement officials who said that Todashev was “primarily” being questioned about the Sept. 11, 2011 triple murder in Massachusetts.
ABC, on the other hand, cites officials who said that “Todashev was initially being questioned about any role in the marathon bombing when it emerged he had connections to the gruesome murder.”
A friend of Todashev, Saeed Dunkaev, told the Orlando Sentinel that he too was questioned by the FBI.
“I just said whatever I know,” Dunkaev
said
. “As I said before, we have nothing to hide. We just said the truth.”
“With me they were nice,” Dunkaev said.
Todashev reportedly trained in mixed martial arts at Boston’s Wai Kru gym with Tsarnaev. One of the victims of the triple murder, Brendan Mess, also reportedly trained there according to a law enforcement officials and a former fighter cited by ABC.
According to Khusen Taramov, Todashev’s friend and roommate, Todashev “used to talk on the phone with [Tsarnaev].”
“They talked last time a month ago. After the bombing, I couldn’t believe it,” Taramov reportedly told local news station WOFL according to the
New York Daily News
.
Taramov also said that he had been questioned by the FBI on Tuesday, according to the Daily News.
Todashev was reportedly arrested earlier this month and charged with aggravated battery following a fight over a parking space.
According to reports, Todashev fought a father and a son at an Orlando shopping mall. The Orange County Sheriff’s Office said that the son was hospitalized with several teeth knocked out and a busted lip but Todashev maintained that he acted in self-defense.
